I've seen this link a few times in the middle of threads relating to NZ driving tests.

This is the official online test practice site, hopefully with it being at the start of this thread will mean everyone can find it nice and easily. Also, hopefully the title is clear enough that it will come up easily on a search too.

Just to add to OH's post - at the top of the page, underneath the title "Tests for Classes L1 and Class 1 (Light Vehicles)" heading you can select which questionnaire to do.

You can choose from 10 questions or the full test of 33 questions. Once you complete a test it tells you how many you have wrong, which they are but does not give you the answer.

The idea being you go look up the answer so you know for next time!

You're only allowed to get 3 wrong - i.e. you need 30 out of 33 to pass.

How are you doing with the practise qs have you got 33 yet?

Yes, mostly get 33, never more than 2 wrong.

I did, however, buy the books, although I only read through the questions once. To be honest it's mostly common sense. You just need to get a handle on a few of the kiwi oddities such as the turning/give way rules and a few minor things such as blue cats eyes and some of the local distance rules, like parking near intersections and how many metres a load can legally hang off the front of your car etc.

Intending to do the test early next week and get it over with and get one more thing off the 'need to do' list whilst I bide my time awaiting employment.

Just to clarify the online test expects 30 out of 33 correct but for the actual test that you will take you must get 32 correct out of 35 to pass.

The test is made up of two test papers: a general paper and a specialist paper. The general paper has 25 questions about road rules and road hazards. The specialist paper contains 10 questions about safety practices that relate to the type of vehicle you are applying for a licence for. (See New Zealand's driver licensing system for the different classes of licence you can apply for.)

Both papers are multi-choice scratch tests, which means you should select the answer you think is correct by scratching the panel next to that answer. This will reveal either a tick, to show your answer is right, or a cross, to show your answer is wrong.

To pass the test you need to get at least 32 questions right out of 35. If you get more than three questions wrong you will need to book to take the test again at another time, and you'll need to pay another test fee.

We used Land Transports list of all possible questions that can be asked on the test (http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/roadcode/theory-test-questions/general-questions.html). The question itself can be clicked on to take you straight to the answer.

Also, I've brough this up before, but when you go to take the test in NZ, if your overseas license shows it was issued less than two years prior, you could end up having to take (and pay for) the driving test in addition to the written test. But if you can bring something official from the licensing authority in the country you came from to show them that you have been driving for more than two years, you'll avoid this.

Effectively, yes. Everyone takes a 'core' test, then you take a supplemental test for the type of licence that you want. The thirty-five test questions are 25 general ones and 10 specific to the licence type (class 1 = car/truck, class 6 = motorcycle).

You can do all the prep online but the actual tests themselves are scratch-off pieces of paper. You can buy sample scratch tests, for car/truck and motorcycle tests, and your 'real' test will in fact be identical to one of the sample scratch tests.
