It seems bad weather has finally hit Hawkes Bay and suddenly I realise exactly what people mean about the older Kiwi homes.

It's not at all funny to wake up freezing and to shovel wood in as fast as your burner can burn it and still be cold :wah

Can't wait to move to our new, fully insulated home complete with massive burner....pity we'll be here all winter.

We've got one oil filled fin heater that we put in the spare room where the girls have taken to sleeping together to keep warm with hot water bottles, bed socks and thick blankets over the duvet. They're usually snuggled together in the night and seem still warm in the morning.

Dh and I are freezing at night....we can see the (thin) curtains waving in the breeze of the rubbish windows :( Double glazing and central heating has made me soft :laugh

We have taken to warming the bed up with hot water bottles on the nights when it feels cold. I know there are a few people who use electric blankets and whilst I have never been a fan of them myself, did use the one in the motel (where we stayed when we first arrived) a couple of nights and can highly recommend them. Just remember to turn them off once you are in. I imagine frazzled toes is not a good look. :exit

Well, look on the bright side, it may improve your love life, you cant beat a bit of body warmth.

Just beware of damp and mould, so try and keep the water outside e.g. open a window.

We were in Briscos over the Queen's Birthday BH weekend and managed to get a bargin on an electric blanket. The OH now swears by it and wondered how we ever used to cope without one. :D We have yet to work out how much it's costing us, but if it stops the OH shivering, then its worth it.

I find the smell from lightly toasting short and curlies is enough to wake me up and remind me to turn the blanket off. :roll

I totally know what you are feeling - we are the same.
All we have is a calor gas heater in our living room which we have had to go buy, and 2 oil fin heaters for each bedroom. Its a race to the heater in the morning to ger some warmth!!!
I have had to put electric blankets on now too, as getting into bed was like jumping into a fridge!!! God knows what the electric bill will be like ?
We too have very thin curtains on the patio doors and a bathroom that is like a fridge in the morning....
Oh says as soon as we buy, he is going to put double glazed units in, as he is joiner, so can knock some up pretty quick..
