Does anyone know the best suburbs to live in around Porirua?

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

The best suburb is probably Whitby, followed by the new Aotea block or maybe Camborne. Other reasonable areas are Plimmerton, Parameta, Pukerua Bay and Papakowhai.

Other areas have mixed reaction e.g. some people love Titahi bay other say to avoid it?

Would probably say to stay away from Cannons Creek, Porirua East, Waitangirua and Elsdon.

But I guess the question might be what you mean by best and what you are looking for?

Thanks for the info and maybe my question was a little open.

Been offered a job in Porirua and are hoping to arrive in NZ in the next few months, depending on visa's being issued.

What i dont want to do is rush off the plane, run around like a headless chicken for a week, find a rental property, sign and then find that we've picked the worst area in town. Dont won't to stay in a hotel/motel for too long trying to find the best place to rent in.

Dont have kids so schooling etc isn't an issue but would like to be somewhere that isnt too far out in the sticks. As i will be away from time to time, would like to be somewhere were it's safe.

Just wondering what other expats have done to regards in finding a place. Hotel / Motel for a week after arriving while looking or have they found a place to rent before arriving. Any good inexpensive motels/hotels in the area that others have used for this purpose that can be recommended.

Can't recommend temp accommodation, just wanted to throw Tawa in as a suggested search area; we have friends there who really love it. (I'm terrible at direction, but they live to either the East or North side of the highway, to the right if you were heading away from Wellington)

For hotel/motel I would suggest you try this mana motel (http://www.manamotel.co.nz/)

It's in a good location and I know others that have stayed there without complaint (It does seem a little close to the main road to me however).

If you are looking for rentals then check out trade me (http://www.trademe.co.nz/) or Guardian First National (http://www.guardianfirstnational.co.nz).

For any rentals/houses it would be best to check them out first as the area is very hilly and you need to find a place with plenty of sunshine otherwise they will be cold and damp.

Porirua has good road and rail links so getting to Wellington or the Kapiti coast are also easy so you could commute in if you want.

And would also say Tawa would also be a good choice it borders Porirua.

When we arrived we had hotal accomodation arranged for a month, which gave us time to find a rental.

Have lived in Tawa for 5 years now - moved from Whitby mainly to get our sons into the (excellent!) High School here. There are some really good primaries too though.
Motel in Tawa: http://www.jasons.com/new-zealand/wellington/bucket-tree-motor-lodge/brochure/

Love the shops here - the main street is big enough to be functional - but small enough to be friendly.
Also good for commuting into Wellington.....2 train stations to choose from! I'm not certain - but I think there are only 2 stations from here to welly and it only takes about 10mins.

If you want to be close to Porirua I'd choose Plimmerton, although it's slightly more expensive than the Whitby/Paramata/Papakowhai side, primarily beacuse of the station and beach. Pauatahanui is nice too.

Titahi Bay traditionally had alot of state housing, some streets aren't great, but it is really up and coming now and prices are rising too. Avoid Porirua East though IMO.

Depending upon how far you want to commute I would also consider Kapiti up to Waikanae - approx 30 mins from Porirua.

Guess it really depends on whether you want a beach lifestyle/easy commute/city life/new house in a new subdivision etc etc....
