Has anyone used 1st Move International? I know there are lots of threads on shipping companies but I don't even know where to begin.

Hi Lockstock
Have to say that's not I've heard of. We are using Whites (container currently somewhere in the world expected to arrive 8 July).
I know others have used James Masons, Robinsons, Britannia (including Lanes), GB Liners, Crown Relocations and Pickfords (who IMHO were expensive).
I do recall people saying not to touch PSS or Anglo Pacific.
Also, try and obtain insurance from a company not associated with the removal company. Letton Percival seems to be the best choice.
Hope this helps.

2 years ago we used PSS. The initial service was excellent. The packing was well done (evidenced by the fact that much of the "essential" belongings we brought out is still in perfect condition still in the original boxes. The guys who did the packing I thought were very professional.
Where it was very disappointing was in the keeping us informed of where our shipment was. Frankly I don't think they cared a damn once they picked it up and sent us their their invoice. Numerous calls got promises of call backs and then silence. Eventually they confirmed the container was in Auckland.
Then it became a problem that PSS simply referred to their NZ partner who was NZ Van Lines.
Our shipment seemed to disappear for 2 months longer than expected (the excuse - "well it is Xmas you know". I've just remembered on of the bikes was bent (difficult to package and protect - if you have an expensive bike I'd suggest you dismantle it and pack it yourself).
NZ Van Lines also had a staff who appear not to be able to ring out from their offices as never did they ring me despite my numerous calls to them.
Eventually they delivered our shipment, and a couple of packages that weren't ours, but less my car trailer. Are you sure the trailer is missing I was asked. I answered that unless they'd crushed it into one of the 40 boxes I'd had delivered all of which were 500mm x 500mm x 500mm, then yes!

Maybe NZ Van Lines have improved, because I've had the opposite experience to Bumpffslam - they have been very prompt and communicative, and speaking on the phone to them has always been quick and easy - no being transferred to other departments, quoting reference numbers, or waiting for them to find my details. No ridiculous MAF charges either.
PSS were my UK shippers as well - again, excellent work by the men who came out to pack and load, despite the fact that their office hadn't given them enough time to do it. They worked very late, slept in their van overnight and rearranged the container themselves, to have it delivered earlier to avoid parking problems. The container arrived in NZ according to schedule too, despite the fact I was late paying the bill (had post problems).
My stuff is being delivered next week, so I'll reserve final judgement until then.

There are few shipping companies and a myriad of shipping agents.
A true insurance policy to cover the goods is a key must moreso the the shipping agent/company choosen.
With valuables a digital photograph could be invaluable. For ornaments lay horizontal against a ruler to give an impression of size etc.
Create your personal case content folder against case numbers.
Cheers
