While my mum was visiting us for a fortnight we went out for coffee often and although I adore the coffee here (especially mochacinnos), everywhere we had it it was drinking temperature immediately. Is this some sort of bizarre health and safety thing (would be so ironic!!), a universal ploy to get us to drink up and leave, a subtle cultural difference thing or have I just been unlucky in all 8 coffee shops :p

You're not supposed to pour boiling water onto coffee as it burns, that's why it should be served just warm enough to drink straight away.
You'll taste the difference if a cafe serves coffee that's too hot to drink as it'll taste bitter :nice1

Oh wow, so maybe that's why the coffee tastes so good :)

The best temperature to force the coffee over the grinds is just over 80 degrees. Otherwise you get that horrid bitter flavour. Hooray for NZ coffee!

Nice smileys Tony.
I haven't drunk coffee for 4 years, don't miss it much except when you walk past a place that has just ground fresh beans.
It is right about the temperature thing though, although if you warm the milk properly then the drink should be warm enough.
Having said that, when I did drink coffee, it was always without milk, I preferred it bitter and I always left it to go cold.

OH likes his coffee HOT!! ... so he orders it 'Extra Hot' and they heat the milk to a higher temperature than normal which avoids the whole burning the coffee thing.

I was only thinking today that my coffee is never hot enough for me. I worked in a coffee shop in the UK and the jug we used for frothing the milk had a thermometer in it to make sure we always bought it to a hot enough temperature as if it's not heated enough it can cause stomach upsets. I worked in a cafe here for 3 weeks ( then left - the staff were grumpy and ' orrible ! ) and they just heated it untill it " Felt warm enough " so maybe they don't have same standards here.

It always seems to me that the temperature of coffee is inversely proportional to the time you have to drink it ;)

I prefer a long black. There's no milk in it and gives me more of a shot than a flat white (or is it just my imagination??).

There's more caffeine in a large coffee than an espresso cos the water goes over the beans for longer and more caffeine is released.

So, Sam B, which is your favourite coffee shop in Hamilton? My 3 favourites are Scotts Epicurean on Victoria Street, Ricket Espresso Bar on Grey Street, and Momento (the one next to the Waikato Management School).

Well, I haven't had a really great coffee in Hamilton yet, because although we live near, we don't go that often and when we have, the coffee has not been perfect. I had the best ever muffin (dark chocolate and apricot) at a coffee shop on Grey Street with an Italian name, can't quite remember it, it began with an F and is next to KFC, but the coffee wasn't strong enough. I shall try your suggestions out next time I'm in town.
Best coffee in Cambridge is between In Stone cafe and Deli on the Corner. But we have to ask for an extra shot in both of those to get it up to the required strength too.
