Hi everybody
I am in need of some advice. I was informed today that my container will be arriving in NZ next week. Now, this about 2 months ahead of schedule and I am just not prepared for its arrival. I am still in furnished accommodation at the moment and I think it will probably take my about 3-4 weeks to arrange other suitable accommodation for me and my container contents!
Do you have any advice on how to "delay" the clearing process at customs, or on storing the container until I am ready to accept delivery?
Many thanks.

Ways to delay - take your time sending your documents back - I mean, it takes a while to fill in all those forms, get certified copies made, and a few days for the post ;)
You could "accidentally" leave something out of those documents - this was done for me, as the police station where I got my passport copies done photocopied the wrong page (my fault for not checking). Anyway, until the shippers receive all of that stuff, nothing can proceed. They will probably want some notice to deliver it as well.
I reckon you could get a few weeks' worth of delay out of that, no problem. If it comes to it, the removals company will store it for you. Other people here have used self-storage too.
Hope that helps :)

I would compare the prices for self storage against the removal companies storage, we found them to be greatly inflated, and even if we had needed to hire a van to move our stuff out of the self storage we would still have been 'quids in!'
The shippers will want you to give them a delivery date ASAP, and if you don't, they will unload your container and put it into storage, charging you their 'inflated' prices, they have to turn the containers around within a set amount of time. I would advise against this as people we know have had stuff 'go missing' between the container been unloaded into storage, then repacked into a van for delivery later - much better if you can witness the seal being broken and watch your goods been removed in person!

Having said that our stuff went groupage and was unpacked and repacked somewhere in Asia, again in Sydney, then Wellington where it was loaded onto rail. They do generally know what they're doing :)

Our stuff was unloaded from our 20' container and put into storage until we were ready for it's delivery and quite a few items went missing.
Luck of the draw I suppose.......
