Hi All

Been reading this forum avidly for months now - thanks to all who post, your advice has been very, very useful.

Anyway me and my OH are moving from West Yorks to Hamilton on the 27th October 2007. OH has a job starting on the 5th Novemeber, and I am planning to get some electrical/telecomms based work upon arrival (he says hopefully...).

Anyway, I have noticed one or two people living in Hamilton/Cambridge etc and I was hoping some of you can give us some much needed advice.

1) Can anyone recommend any areas to rent/not to rent in Hamilton.

2) What would be the commuting time from Cambridge to Hamilton?

3) Any other pearls of wisdom wii be greatly received.

Many thanks in advance

Paul

Hi Paul

Its a great forum, isn't it!

OH, myself & our 2 westies plan to be in Hamilton (moving from Glasgow) in September. I used to live in Cambridge (about 15 years ago) & commute time then was around 20-25 mins. As you say, there's loads of people on here who live that way & can correct me if this is out-of-date!

As far as good/bad areas go, I'll also leave that to others, as I've been away for so long - there's areas now that didn't even exist when I was there!

Just to say good luck & we can maybe meet up down under.

Sal

Hi Paul,

Can only name a few places to stay away from in Hamilton eg: Nawton, Dinsdale(only certain parts) and maybe a few others, as this is due to me not living there, but hey there are quite a few good places also and i'm sure one or two of the forum members who are in situ in Hamilton can direct you better than me. In the meantime................. The commute from Cambridge is only 20 mins, just the same time if you lived where i am in Te Awamutu. Both places are rural, but have the small journey time into the City.

You ask for pearls of wisdom, so i will just say before you do decide where to base yourself, just get in the car and come and see these places and you just might be surprised.

Oh by the way, welcome to our world.

Hi Paul

Welcome to the forum and congratulations to your OH on her job.

We've been in Hamilton 6 weeks today and are loving it. Kim has given some sound advice - maybe stay in a motel for a couple of weeks and get in the car and have a drive round.

You don't say what your OH does or where she'll be working. It might be an a good idea once you find a place you think you want to live in to take a drive along the route she would be taking in rush hour. Cambridge and Te Awamutu are 20 mins drive away normally but not sure about during rush hour.

We've been doing lots of investigations since we arrived about where we might to live/could afford to live. We're currently renting in Rototuna which is lovely as is Flagstaff, Pukete, Hillcrest seems nice, some areas of Chartwell. Areas me and OH would avoid are as Kim says, Nawton, Dinsdale and Fairfield. It really depends what you want from your home.

Whereabouts in West Yorkshire are you moving from - I'm a Leeds lass myself but was living in Scotland before our move out here.

Anyway, good luck and if you need any further help or advice just send us a PM and we'll be more than happy to help.

We are planning our recce for Feb 08 and then we will take it from there. I am in the RAF and leave next year, so I will see what happens on the job front here. If nothing turns up, then we will make the move then....

Good Luck

Hi guys and welcome to the forum.

We're about to head out to Hamilton (teenage daugher and self) - OH already in situ (working:yes ) and very impressed with the area so far bearing in mind neither of us have ever been to NZ before and the "job" has dictated our landing pad! We all seem to be a growing band of Waikato migrants and judging by the peeps on this forum (who are a great bunch) appear to be settling in very well.

I'm just waiting for the packers to arrive and we will be heading out 8 July. We're looking at Hillcrest at the moment (for high schools) but hubby is still looking round for rentals so not quite decided on suburbs just yet. Cambridge looks a lovely place. Sam B (our ambassador for Cambridge!) really rates this little town and we're still undecided whether to live outside of Hamilton or in the burbs to be honest. We're gonna wait until we all get there and make up minds:nice1

Hi

Ambassador for Cambridge here (ha ha). I can do Cambridge to the outskirts of Hamilton (Hillcrest) in 15 minutes without speeding, but then the drive through Hamilton to my office base is another 15 mins at least, depending on the time of day. So, it depends where you work.

Cambridge is lovely though ......

Welcome guys, another Cambridge-ite here. About 20 minutes travel from here, depending on time of day and which route you take. Pretty straightforward to be honest.

Hi Guys

We too are heading to Cambridge tomorrow with Westie following in a few weeks. OH will commute into Hamilton every day,as everyone sayss only 20 mins but the traffic is minimal so it is actaully a nice drive.

Keep you posted on how we find the area.

Thanks, everyone so far for your help and kind thoughts. It's easy to forget there are some good guys about!

Good to here there are a few of us from West Yorks! Plus Waikato seems to be a popular choice, which is re-assuring.

Best of luck to all who are moving soon or in the system. I am sure it will all be worth it in the end.

Hiya guys

I think you can subscribe to a thread? That might help. Or you can go to 'Thread Tools' (drop down menu at top of page) and you can select the 'printer friendly' version of the thread/post - saves on the ink!!

Hope this helps a little:)

If you are using internet explorer then you can also save the appropriate thread as a favorite (Just select Favorites from the tool bar and then add to favorites).

I am sure that there must be similar options for the other browsers also.
