Hi all,

have been reading now for the last few weeks and thought that it was about time we introduced ourselves. We are Jennie and Mike +1(Olli 6yrs) and a dog that will also be moving with us if i can persuade OH to pay huge amount to bring him over. OH is waiting to hear about job offer on Mon!! v excited but have decided even if he doesnt get it we are coming over anyway, OH is car mechanic and have been advised that there are plenty of jobs out there for him (can any one out there support this?) This site as been an enormous help already, but as it gets closer to move date I am worried that the endless list of things that I need to do before we go will never get done!!we never realised how complicated simple things like moving money could be.. So I apologise in advance if any questions I come up with have been asked before.

Quick one before I go to bed, in the hope that someone out there will have the right answer so I can stop having sleepless nights over it... We have decided to bring car with us, but when we phoned not so nice lady  at customs to ask her to send us the necessary forms we were told that if we only had work visa we would have to pay tax on car!! (but not rest of container!) is this right we were under the impression that if we had job offer and work visa bringing car in would be tax free. Can anyone enlighten us?

Also we are planning to move to Nelson region, but have recently heard negative things, such as people not friendly, or welcoming to new comers, which I do find hard to believe cause when we traveled nz last christmas everyone was v friendly.

have only had good and friiendly experiences from people in Nelson area.

I would do some research as to whether its really worth it to bring the car.

Welcome to the forum Jennie, Mike & Ollie.

There have been a couple of posts from people about brininging cars over - I would do a search using the button above and see what info you can find.

I've not yet been to Nelson so am unable to comment on that particular area but generally we have found Kiwi's to be very accepting to new comers.

thanx for speedy welcome, have done lots of searches re car but still cant seem to find answer to question! maybe am looking in wrong place. Reason that we really want to bring car is has v low miles and we wont get all our stuff in 20 ft container so thought we would opt for 40ft with car

There are lots of good used cars to be had in Nelson- let us know if you need the name of someone reputable. We got a great car and are very happy with it. Also if you want some social contact, let us know- We would be happy to get together for a beer or glass of wine.

Cheers,

Wendy and Mel

I have done A LOT of research on the topic of bringing a LHV (left handed vehicle to NZ). I am assuming you have a LHV.. :p

Anyway, I found out some hard facts on this that stopped me from even trying it:

a) Import tax = 2-3% of the value of the car (unavoidable)
b) high cost to ship on a cargo ship
c) high cost of marine insurance for the car while on a cargo ship (required by most freight forwarding companies)
d) Inability to insure a LHV in NZ. In NZ, none of the 5 major insurance providers I contacted (i.e. State.co.nz) would never touch my 2005 Subaru Forester even though is was in great/new shape. Why? Well because of lack of parts available in NZ for damage to a LHV.
e) Your current auto insurance provider most likely will not cover your car in a foreign island country (i.e. myself: I use State Farm in the USA. They only insure my car in Canada and the USA)

I suppose if you had a RHV it could be worth it? For me, just the challenge of getting myself and my cat ($2000 incl. cat's cargo/airfare, vet bills and 30 day quarantine) is enough expense for me to happy to part with my car :exit . After all, it's only a car to me!! I am going to get a nice affordable 150cc scooter when I get to Welly! Of course that path is easy for me because I am single with no kids :nice1

Good luck with your decision making on this one. It's a big decision indeed...

John
