I have been speaking to New Zealand House in London and was told I can not apply for any sort of work visa (apart from the 12 month holiday visa), unless I have a job waiting for me in New Zealand.
Is this true?
Also do I have to prove a qualification in English as I have noticed on the application form it states, "do not complete anymore of this form unless you have a reconized qualification in English".
Is this also true?:cheers

Where are you posting from??
If you are British and English is your mother tongue, you don't need a qualification in English language.
Yes, you do need a job to get a work visa.
What are your plans?
Maybe we can help.....

Hi Julie,
We are coming from England to New Zealand in the summer of 2008.
We have been talking to an agent who has advised us that we should go out to New Zealand for a 2 week work interview holiday, then once we get a job offer fly back to the U.K where he can push for a work to residencey visa or PR then fly back to New Zealand 6 weeks later.
How does that sound to you?

Don't get me started on immigration agents !!!
Obviously, some people are happy to use one, but personally, I think it's a waste of precious money.
Will PM you.

Hi, and welcome on board. It sounds fine upto the point that you come to NZ for finding work. But then I am not sure why you would need to go to the UK just so that your agent can help you get the needed documents. Why can't you simply apply for a work permit once you have found a job in NZ on your own? Just do a search on this topic here and you will find ship load of stuff. Good luck

Take the plunge as the above have said, i arrived in NZ last week just on a Working Holiday Visa (although of course you dont even need that!) and i hope and have no intention of returning to UK except for a holiday.
Once i have travelled and done bit of Recce, i plan to find that job i desire and then apply for a work visa, and then go down normal route of EOI and PR from there on.
I also looked and spoke to agents a year or two ago, and it was finding this great forum that made me decide i didnt need any 3rd party help, and could do all the work myself. And here i be down under at last.
There's some great advice and great people on this forum and can get you through the processes (i feel all humbled now) :p

That my dear folks is how the vd Westhuizen family from south africa is doing it. 14 Aug 2007 we land in Auckland, for 3 week recce trip, then interviews, then work permit, then EOI, then ITA, then PR.
Broadly speeking !!!

OH is applying for jobs at the moment, having gone through the nzqa and teachers council registration (although still waiting registration).
We hope to have a job before we go, inorder to apply for work visa, but I am expecting us to go without the visa and then apply for permit once in NZ.
The only problem with this route is the shipping of belongings.

Welcome to the forum.:cheers
You can do it on your own if you study this forum and the NZIS information... http://www.immigration.govt.nz/ ...and learn from them. Lots of people do that, but it's not easy and requires lots of time. (... at least for those of us who need to read everything three times and then be hit over the head a couple times to get our attention!)
Use the search engine at the top of the page. You might want to start here:

Good luck and keep asking questions. We'll try to help.

As I understand it you have 6 months to visit NZ without a visa (as a Brit). It can take 60 days to get a work permit in New Zealand so as long as you find a job with enough visitor time left (so you're not there illegally) to get your work permit you'll be fine. You would also need to have enough money to live on while you're there. Be aware that some companies don't like offering you a job unless you already have a work permit. Also, when you first arrive, don't tell customs your plan to work there when you're only entering as a visitor as they can turn you away. Your ticket also won't be able to be a one way ticket if you're entering as a visitor.
If you are applying for a 2 year work permit you will need some medical tests done and I think a police certificate. When you do the medicals they are only valid for 3 months. You may want to do these before finding your job so that it doesn't take too long to get your application for the work permit in. Not too early though or they'll expire before you apply! You also might want to get your police cert. before you leave England...check with the other UKers here to see how long that takes to obtain. Here in the US it take a long time (3 - 4 months).
If you are a skilled migrant and would qualify for PR under the skilled migrant category you could always do it this way:
- Go to NZ as a visitor.
- Find a job.
- Apply for a work permit that's less than a year and submit your Expression of Interest (EOI) for PR.
If your work permit is less than a year you don't need the police check immediately (not until you are picked based on your EOI and are ready to apply for PR - permanent residency). You also wouldn't need to submit medicals until applying for PR as long as you haven't been to a country with a high incidence of TB.
I would think that one year would be enough time to get the PR but if not you could get a further work permit until you got PR.
If you're under 30 you can go on a working holiday initially for a year with no job offer I believe. If you're under 35 there's another program you can go with for a year (can't remember the name sorry).
Hope that helps a little,
Carly

Good job, Carly! The under 35 is the BUNAC visa plan, and it's actually a worldwide plan.

[QUOTE]If you are applying for a 2 year work permit you will need some medical tests done and I think a police certificate.
Get your Subject Access(police certs) done before you leave. They are valid for 6 months and as your visitors visa is issued for 6 months on entry, they will not expire before your visa does.
Tell passport control you are here to travel the country.
Do not bring any food in your luggage or a bag that has carried food (rucksack that you used to take your lunch to work in) or the dogs will have you before you reach the suitcase carousel:o

Your only problem this end is GST or bond pending PR.
If you have any free storage in UK from shippers, use that and then send for it when you are sorted in NZ.
As a resident you are allowed one import of goods free of GST. If you are in process of PR, they may charge you a bond ( 10% of value of goods importing) which you can claim back when you get residency.
Door to door service also means from one address in UK to one address in NZ, so if you are not sorted when goods arrive you may have to look at storage in NZ. Storage facilities away from the port are def cheaper than at the port.

:cheers Hi Guys,
Thank you all so much for all of the information and support you have given us. It has made things a lot clearer now and we both know what path to go down.
As we are both in our mid to late-tweenties and have no ties with the UK, we are going to book our flights out to NZ in June '08 and apply for everything out there (jobs, work visa or PR/EOI).
We will get our police checks and full medical before we leave the UK.
Is ther anything else we should do before we go?
We have been told about a 12 month working holiday visa is it worth us applying for this?
Thanks again guys xxx

Full medical is only valid for 3 months and I believe is actually cheaper in NZ, so it may be better to leave it till you are in nz.
