Hello all!

A quick question: are the 8 and 10 hour shift for nursing standard in NZ? That was what was available with the hospital my wife interviewed with (and there was waiting list for the 10 hour shifts). My wife much prefers working the standard 12 hour shifts here, and simply working fewer days per month. Not to mention such a schedule would allow us more time to explore while were in NZ.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers,
Grant and Jamie

My dh works 9 hour shifts, has a 40 hr working week and works 4 days on, 2 days off, iyswim. Unfortunately he has no option to do either 10 or 12 hr shifts, although he has done 16 hr ones as overtime, but obviously that is not good.

I guess depends where you work, and which department, I currently work at Auckland Hospital, and the dept I work in is very flexible (not sure in other depts) we have 4, 8 & 12 hour shifts, 12 hour are more popular, but the short shiufts are also great for those with young families. So if you work full time 12 hour shifts it works at 3 x 12 hour shifts and every 3rd week 4 x 12 hour shifts.

Thanks all.

Our recruiter told us much the same thing--that shift length vary from hospital to hospital. We've decided that 8 hour shifts are fine, and we'll get Jamie on the 10-hour waiting list the moment she starts.

Unfortunately, we just discovered today exactly how long the FBI background check takes. Seems like the process might take a bit longer than we thought. :(

Oh well, we're still hoping to celebrate Christmas in Christchurch....
