Has anyone recommendations for accomodation in the Mount Cook area ? There appears to be the Hermitage (very pricey) and Glenntanner Park Centre (15 mins away). Wondering if anyone had personal experience of either
Thanks, Steve

Hi Steve
We've stayed at the Hermitage a couple of times, great place albeit rather over-run with Japanese both times - can get busy with bus tours stopping there for lunches too.
Nice restaurant, fantastic location (huge picture windows in each room that look out on to Mount Cook), a somewhat "corporate" feel in a way, not exactly an Alpine Lodge.
Great food, great breakfasts.
Yes, it's pricey, but they've pretty much got you by the short and curlies if you want the views and location.
They do have motel accommodation / chalets too, worth ringing to see what they have and how much, although not sure if they have mountain views.
(They do a great "touching the glaciers" morning boat trip from Hermitage :nice1)

We decided against the hotel right up at Mt Cook as the only accomodation they had left were some chalets so we drove back down to Twizell, where the motel was also full up - however, the very nice owner let us stay in her house! Very nice indeed, but unfortunately I can't help too much with your question :)

We stayed in Lake Tekapo and drove to Mt Cook and back which took about an hour each way. I'd recommend it as you have more shops, restaurants and other stuff around you.
Most of the accommodation in Lake Tekapo looks out across the brilliant blue lake with mountains all around and although no view of Mt Cook from here it is still fabulous. There are lots of different accommdation options from hostels to B&Bs, luxurious holiday appartments to hotels.
You can also do stargazing at night - this part of NZ has the clearest skies and is a light protection zone to ensure that light pollution does not spoil your nighttime views.
