We have a couple of questions regarding shipping our belongings to NZ. As we do not have a work visa or PR and we are going to come over and sort that part out in NZ, when can we ship our belongings over? Do we have to wait till we get PR?
Also we have a friend who is a New zelander and lives in Hastings, NZ, can she ship our stuff from the UK to NZ?
Does anyone know?????????????

I do remember having to send copies of our visa's to the shippers whilst we were in the UK. Have to admit, I can't remember why though.
As far as your Kiwi friend is concerned I really wouldn't want the responsibility if I were in her shoes. It's a bit like one of the questions that customs ask you at any airport 'Did you pack your own suitcase?'
Not to mention the implications, MAF etc............:no
The UK shippers will store them for you and send them out to you (or anywhere else for that matter) at a later date........just a thought.

We're awaiting the arrival of our container into NZ. I think you have to have PR or Work Visa otherwise you will be charged GST on the whole of your container on arrival in NZ.
We didn't receive PR until a few days before we flew out of the UK and so arranged with our removal company to store our belongings, in our case just for two weeks.
We have gone with Whites who offered us 8 weeks free storage and a very reasonable weekly rate thereafter.
Hope this helps and good luck with your plans.

The way that I understand it is that you would effectively be doing a temporary import and as such will need to pay a security deposit on your possesions.
See Temporary Imports (http://www.customs.govt.nz/importers/Private+Importers/Temporary+Imports.htm) for more details.
If you re-export within a year you get the money back and I also believe that if you get a WTR or PR then you will also get it refunded.
The information doesn't state this though, so would follow the link to send them a message to confirm.
Personally, I would keep it in storage in the UK until you have at least confirmed that you are going to stay in NZ.

I was told my NZ Immigrations I'd pay a deposit or import tax on them if I did not have a work visa or PR in place. If you have either, and you are the owners of the stuff in transit then there's no charges.
Best to see the URL link that Ian sent you first or call Wellington or your assigned Immigrations Officer for better assurances.
For me personally, I will not ship a thing until I get my work visa in hand. It's better to be safer than sorry :nice1
Good luck!

If your friend imported it, she would be charged import taxes and GST. The fact that she is a New Zealander wouldn't make any difference, as the exemption is for new migrants only, and you can only get it once. Even though you don't need to present your passport until the goods arrive in NZ, I'd leave them in the UK until you have some kind of visa sorted out, just in case there are any delays or problems - as I understand it, a work visa needs to be valid for more than 12 months to qualify, else the other charges mentioned in previous posts apply. Hope this helps.
