Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if Northland would be a suitable place for us to settle next year once we come over? Can anyone recommend the best places to live in Northland and if there is a lot of work available in that region? My parents have just had their EOI pulled out the pool and are currently going through the process. Me and my girlfriend are looking at just coming over on a WHV and looking for a permanent job once over there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Tony:)

Hi guys,

Well, I'm not there, so I can't comment on the area, but those who are in the know will probably need some background info from you on a couple of things:

Re. location, what sort of lifestyle are you looking for? Urban, rural, beach etc? How big/small a place do you want to live in?

Re. jobs, what sort of work would you be looking for? Do you have an particular skills/qualifications, or are you just looking for something casual at first?

Good luck :nice1

Thanks Debbie,

We are preferably looking for a rural kind of location and a laid back lifestyle if possible. Ideally we would like a 3 bedroom house to start off with if possible, but will be renting for the first couple of years until we settle. On the job front, I am a project manager in the telecommunications / engineering sector. Ideally would be looking for something similar if possible. Thanks for the help.

I think your main problem will be jobs. They are there for what you do, but are few and far between. You may have to have your job dictate where you settle.
My 2 cents...

thanks for the info, I think initially we are going to settle near Auckland and rent then once we are a bit more settled look for work in other areas. Hopefully it will all work to plan...

Thanks

I think Northland would provide lots of opportunities for the kind of rural lifestyle you want, but as mentioned, not many jobs in telecommunications in the north. Most likely place would be Whangarei, you could check there. but lots of people live 45 minutes or an hour north of Auckland (where its quite rural) and commute to work in the city, or have a job in one of the burbs. It mike make sense to focus on jobs first and then paln your location based on wehre the jobs will be.

As said above: Northland does not have many job options including the only big city Whangerei. I also would stick to the Auckland area.
Good luck!

I've been in NZ 2 years and have just relocated to the Bay of Islands. There is life and work north of Whangarei! It's a beautiful area, relatively isolated but aroung Paihia and Kerikeri so far we've found some good restaurants, bars, salsa dancing, local radio, great fishing, local airport .... far from being as primative as where we previously lived.

True there are not many big companies, I probably work for the biggest and there might be opportunities for a project manager with electrical engineering experience. Send me your CV to my private message if you want.

Housing wise, there are not many hosues to rent because the rent does not pay the mortgage cost. Looking in Winter is more likely to be successful. Agents seem unwiling/unhelpful if you are not physically here. Expect to pay 300-400 per week for a 3 bed house.

We've been in NZ for 12 months and lived in Kerikeri all that time. As mentioned this is a fabulous area to live. I can't comment on job opportunities in your sector, but I work from home for a company 7 hours drive (2 hours by air) South from here. Ah, the power of the Internet.

This is an pricey area for housing if you want to live in one of the main communities, though still very reasonable compared to the UK.

Apart from Whangarei, the towns round here are small, but everything you need is available.

We love it, by far the nicest area we have found in NZ, but that of course is based on what we feel is important in our lives.
