Hi
Was reading through the threads and im in two minds really....
We still have a couple of months left in the UK (about 8-12 months) before moving to NZ.
We are currently living in furnished rented accomodation in London.
Now I was wondering we need to buy new furniture, white goods etc. when we get to NZ. Would it be better to buy it now in the UK and use it for a while and then ship it over or shall we just hang on and buy everything in NZ.
Was just wondering cost wise which will work out cheaper.
Any suggestions??
Thanks :nice1

stuff here is expensive and there will be more choice in the UK but obviously you will have to add shipping on too.

I've recently heard from a mate of mine who moved to NZ a few months back. They took the option of taking nothing and buying when they got there.
She regrets it big time. Quite expensive and limited choice.

This is an interesting thread!
We did not bring any white goods or electrical goods, but brought things like beds, furniture, sofas etc. Par of this was because we would have had to go to next size up on container (v expensive). If renting, a lot of properties will come with some white goods (usually fridge, freezer and d/w). We bought a new washing machine and tumble dryer and they cost about $1,500 new (reliable brand). We have actually found a lot of choice here for most of what we want, but then we tend to go for basic functionality rather than things with lots of bells and whistles.

I find the choice of furniture here fantastic! There are some great designers here and I am enjoying planning a whole new house (when we eventually get one!) to match my whole new life!
If you like original antique furniture you may find choice limited.
Personally I am glad we sold up everything :yes

With regard to white goods, it has been said before, but worth repeating. If you buy new white goods in the UK and use them, you will be able to import them into NZ without any problem from customs regarding tax etc.
However, the guarantee you get, covering the first year, will be of no use in NZ and it is very unlikely you will be able to get spares for "UK brands" if anything goes wrong. Of course you can always take a chance and these days white goods are good for 4 or 5 years.
Personally we plan on taking the larder fridge, hoover and freezer, but are leaving behind the washing machine and dishwasher. When we were in NZ in 2003, we found white goods prices comparable to here in the UK and there was a pretty good choice. If we are tight on space in the container, then the white goods we plan on taking will get left behind.
