Really amazing how this "What temperature is your house" thread is adding to the way I want to design our new house in NZ. It's not really changing, but definitely tells me not to forget anything concerning typical internal/external climate aspects. It also tells me I'll have to investigate more on the hardware available in NZ.
What's the smartest thing you ran into?

I ran into a patio door once. Honestly, that really did smart.
Seriously though, under floor heating.

Thanks BBBloke,
do you happen to know what kinds of under floor heating are being used in NZ?
Is it just electrical? Or with fluids? (Hot) air? Under tiled floors only?

Hmmm, don't know what options are available to be honest. We went to look at a house that had it installed, it was a niipy day and it felt bloomin' mervellous. Pretty sure it was a concrete floor so must have been piped fluids embedded in the screed, I imagine.

A majority of the under foor heating is electrical pads or coils. You can also use the pumped hot water system, and if you happen to live in an area with strong underground thermals, you can actually tap into them and get free underfloor heating. A friend of ours did this in Taupo.

Wouldn't you expect that in many, if not most, places in NZ it would be possible to get your heat from under your house?
Of course the earth-layers are different in thickness/substance, but I expect there to be a great source to tap into anyhow.
Would you need a building permit for something like it? And would it make a difference if you build such an installation under/in your house or just near your house?
BTW, we are planning to build in Waikato, but wouldn't it be great if most/all houses in NZ could benefit from the heat beneath them? I'm sure there must have been or are plans to do such a thing?
