I had to take my car for it's WOF and I would be hanging around with nothing to do for half an hour. The driving test place was next door so I thought why not? I did a couple of hours on the on-line test site and checked the questions I was unsure about in the road code book Zardell kindly gave me. Took 10 minutes and I passed getting a score of 100%! Shows how easy it is!!:uhoh

I SO need to do this! I have been here since April 06 and haven't done it...oops...but I have been back to the States twice so I am just assuming that the year clock is reset every time I go and come back....and if that isn't true, I don't want to know....ignorance is bliss....

Erm, it isn't true, and you could well be prosecuted for not having a valid driving licence (which also invalidates your insurance). Not a risk I'd like to take personally...
Congrats on passing your test Willsken.

I wouldn't worry about it - when you apply for the licence transfer (the pink form) they'll ask for your arrival date in NZ. Supply the last date of arrival and you'll be within the letter of the law. LTNZ says this on their site:
"Each time you visit New Zealand, you can drive for a further 12-month period on a valid overseas licence or international driving permit, as long as you stay for no more than a year at a time."
http://www.landtransport.govt.nz/factsheets/56.html
I took the test two weeks ago. Make sure that the scratch-off answers (and test ID numbers) are in perfect condition before you start - I had to retake the whole thing because someone had scatched off the part revealing the test's number, which is supposed to be kept secret.
It's easy - skim the website to remind yourself of specific details (minimum tire tread depth: 1.5mm, max space between towed and towing vehicle: 4m, etc.) that will be tested. Take sample online tests. If you're not 100% comfortable, go to AA and buy the set of actual tests for $15 and take them at home. No worries.

How does it invalidate your insurance when insurance is not compulsory?

If you take out insurance, you need a valid driver licence. If you go beyond a year and don't do the NZ licence test, you don't have a valid licence so the insurance becomes invalid.

Do you have to surrender your UK licence, or do you get NZ licence in addition?
