So here I am in a new location again with no clue as to where to go for a haircut, etc. Want to get my legs waxed before the wedding/honeymoon. Anyone have suggestions of places to go in Auckland?
Thx:)

I can heartily recommend Chantal Landais on Ponsonby Road. They are fab in there! And not as expensive as some of the other salons either.

Fantastic. Nothing like trying to shave while living in a youth hostel;)
Looking for laser hair removal places too---started that a while back (much more expensive than waxing, but well worth it for areas like underarms)

I went to a place on the North Shore before our Raro trip...Soul Essentials. Saw Mel. She was good. I also went to James at Jarvis in Ponsoby for a hair cut. He was good. First new person to touch my hair in 15+ years.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Think I will make an appt. with the place in Ponsonby. I've never had my legs waxed before---how long does it last? I was thinking to do it about a week before the honeymoon (we'll be gone 2 wks).
And do you have to grow your hair out much beforehand?

You need to have enough hair for the wax to grab but you don't want it really long or it will hurt. Not much of an answer but hopefully that will help. And it depends on how long it lasts, everyone is different but you should get 4-6 weeks out of it.

Hello
Do you know Shaba in NZ? It's a waxing method from india, i think. It's somewhat like a sugar-Oil-way! you just heat it up in the microwave and have it in your fingers like dough! then you coat your hair and just rip it off! It's like a 1000 time less painful than normal wax, due to its softness hair doesn't break as often and it doesn't irritate your skin too much. Sure, it still hurts a bit. But I can do it on my own "down there". I have bought 1 kg wax in Switzerland and will bring it with me! It's totally worth carrying 1kg wax on me, because it will last for more than a year.
Maybe you should think about that!?

Try the online Yellow Pages (http://yellowpages.co.nz/index.jsp) and do a search on "waxing". Many of the businesses have links to their websites, making it fast and easy to check prices.

Same question for a bikini wax. I've never had one before but am about to. Should I shave first? I'm really afraid it's going to hurt and want to do what I can to minimize the pain.

Howie: DON'T Shave!!! I do Bikini Waxing ALL the time! Shaved hair is much thicker and harder to get out! It won't hurt as much as arm-pit-waxing or leg-waxing! for afew people it's hard to have someone looking so precisely at our hair down there...but I did'nt mind at all the first time. She was really nice and funny, and I had to laugh a lot during the waxing, so I didn't even notice she was already all the way down! I do Brazilian Waxing, so you really have to show EVERYTHING. But it's OK! I actually like to go, because I found such a nice lady who does it! Bute really: Check out SHABA!!! I tried normal wxing one, I had to stop in the middle and go home, it hurt sooo bad, I walked like an idiot at lesat 2 days! With Shaba, I notice nothing at all, and it's all natural!!

I found a recipe to do Shaba waxing at home: 1glass off sugar in a pan, moisten sugar with lemon juice (not soak) and heat it up (but do not burn!!) the syrup, until it's a brownish waxy syrup. Let that cool down a bit until its' lukewarm and then spread it over your hair, strech your skin with the other hand and tear off the wax in one jult! Against the groth-direction of the hair of course! Try it!

Suzer,
Check out the IPL at Skin and Soul Clinic (http://www.sasclinic.co.nz/April%20Newsletter%20-%20Gift%20with%20Facial%20+%20MORE.htm). They use a wand that covers approx a 5cm x 1cm area per shot, so it goes pretty quickly. I've only had 1 treatment so far, but the results are amazing. There's such a lessening in the amount, color, and thickness of regrowth that I can really tell the few spots they missed. It's not cheap, but never to have to shave or wax again -- what bliss!

NO DON'T SHAVE first. You can trim but don't shave as there has to be enough to grab. Also don't go near or during your period as it will hurt more. And if you are really concerned take some panadol before you go. It isn't that bad...You play ice hockey, your tough, you will be fine.

Ok, I just had eyebrow threading for the first time. It hurt so much I couldn't stop shaking. I think I'm going to woss out of the bikini wax this weekend. I'm such a woss.

No don't wuss out. I think an eyebrow wax is FAR more painful then a bikini wax. Seriously, it is I'm not joking...

Threading is more painful than waxing - but the results are so much better! (But then I don't think threading or waxing are particularly painful myself.)
I wouldn't even contemplate putting wax on my face though, so it's a no brainer for me when it comes to eyebrows...
Where did you get it done? Sometimes a less experienced threader can tug a bit, which does hurt! I really recommend East Day Spa near Sky City in the CBD - the Balinese girl there (whose name I always forget) is a wonder and very gentle.
A bikini wax sholdn't be painful at all - don't wuss out. Take a couple of Panadol an hour or so beforehand if you think it may hurt though.

I agree, i find my eyebrows excrutiating to get done, and my legs/bikini are fine!

Just curious....is waxing/threading eyebrows really any different from using a pair of tweezers? Only takes me about 5 minutes, mind you i'm not short sight so I can actually see what i'm doing :laugh

I think everyone is different onwhat spots on the body are more painful for these things. I'm getting my underarms lasered next week and dreading it, bc the last two times it was so painful I had to make them stop for a break.

I think it has to be at least 5mm long.... so you have to put up with being hairy for a week or two!

Can highly recommend Ruby Waxx (love the name :laugh) in the City :nice1
Just been and I've never been waxed so quickly in all my life! Very thorough as well....if you catch my drift.
It was over too quickly to be painful.

I finally got waxed. I got a bikini wax, eyebrow was, eyelash tint, manicure and pedicure (I had a gift certificate). The waxing was painful, but not nearly as bad as I had feared. The kind woman I had was so patient with me and thorough, but not too thorough. She said we could do a little more next time if I wanted. Eyebrow waxing was way better than threading, but I also didn't have as much to get waxed this time. The eyelash tinting was surprisingly painful, but not too bad and came out looking great.
So yes, vanity can be painful, but not as bad as I had imagined and I feel really really good (and don't look too bad either). I'm already booked in for my next appointment.
BTW, I went to MacKenzie Paige at the Hub in Botany.

The eyelash tinting hurt? Why was that? Did it sting?

Yes it stung when she wiped it off afterwards. And I had trouble seeing for a little bit. I was wearing my contacts, and not sure if that made it worse. But not too bad and I'm really happy with the results.

I go to Illusions on Broadway in Newmarket for my bikini waxing - get Lisa to do it as she is fantastic and the type of wax they use means it is much less painful than any of the waxing I ever had done in the UK!

On average, how long does it last for you guys? And how thorough is it...do you have to do some plucking afterwards?

This place is actually relatively inexpensive (and near home) and has a special going right now---$95 for bikini wax and free underarms.
I definitely recommend laser over waxing now that I've had both. Ultimately, laser isn't more expensive as after a few treatments it's perm.

Just a follow up to say I went to get laser done about a week and a half ago at skin and soul and will definitely go back. Got the bikini, underarms, upper lip and chin for $170, I think, with is a great deal. Not much pain and very effective, and the woman who does it is very personable.

It all depends on your type of hair and where it is...it all depends on the person. Average is 6x, but I've noticed a big difference after two. I've had 4x on the underarms and have gone from serious 5o'clock shadow and never smooth to almost nothing and only need to shave every few days to get the little that is there gone. My underarms really used to annoy me. Upper lip and chin have had done 5x I think and one more should do it. My hair and skin type is perfect for laser though as my skin is very fair and hair is dark, almost black and very dense and thick under the arms and on legs.
