One of the things I’d like to avoid is a long-haul flight via Los Angeles, but accept I’ll have to if I want Air New Zealand’s 63kg baggage allowance. If anyone has done the journey and remembers the details, could you stick them in the form below please? It’s a question of baggage for me really, but if anyone wants to add to the “form” or improve it, please do. Cheers.
Airline (s) :
Route :
Baggage Allowance :
Excess Baggage Applied For :
Excess Baggage Given :
Excess Baggage Cost :
Problems? : (different allowances for change in airlines, etc)
Hints : (apply in advance, at the desk, etc)
Just want to carry as much as possible without L.A.!
Thanks.

not quite what you are after but the other benefit of Air NZ is the seat pitches are about 2/3 inches bigger than most other airlines. so its a bit more comfortable. this is offset by not having your own personal 'TV' not an issue with me as I am very boring and read the whole way. I have also been informed that united emirates have a good luggage allowance so it may be worth looking into them.

Caven,
If you fly Singapore airlines straight out and have a work visa for NZ in your passport they increase your baggage allowance ( as you are emigrating) from 30 to 60 - something like that. May be worth checking out as have flown both and no contest - Singapore air wins hands down, as does Changi over LAX.

Caven,
We have just arrived in Auckland. We decided to take our time getting here - so flew via Japan and Australia. I was totally paranoid each time we boarded a new flight that we would be pulled up on the weight of our bags, but we breezed through no problems each time, no questions asked - except for an internal flight we took in aus (and we werent even carrying all our luggage with us !)
There were two of us travelling and the allowance was 20Kg each check-in and 7kg each for hand luggage - but this is what we had ...
Our check-in Bags weighed 44Kgs - One bag was 27g on its own!
Hand Luggage was 22Kg - 10Kg - 12Kgs
I guess this isnt too much overweight, so i would say you can get away with a few kgs over what they state you can take
We flew BA to Japan and then Quantas from Japan to Aus and Aus to NZ.
Hope that helps

we flew with singapore airlines and they would not give us any extra baggage allowance as flying with only a work visa at the time whilst residency going though!!
In the end we were about 10Kg over and nothing was said at check in although the bags were marked with red tags to show over 20Kgs, I presume this is for the baggage handlers benefit as we were not charged any extra.

we emailed singapore airlines and said we were emigrating and they allowed us 25kilo.

Thanks guys,
Seems to be a degree of flexibility with weight. Really chuffed about S.A. wannaway, we definately prefer them with all the good press they get...plus there's more land on that route in case of any dramas :eek :laugh
