My OH has just been offered a post which he has accepted for a period of two years with the plan to see how we like NZ and then stay on longer if possible. Now starting the process of visas etc. Excited but hit me this morning when reading the thread with children's comments about the effect on our children. We are moving with 4 children (age 7,5, 2 and 1). Five year old very emotional. We live near OH's family who think I am driving the move and my mum is upset as well. But we see it as a time for the 6 of us to spend some time together exploring other options.

I will probably be on here a fair bit now for information, advise etc.

Well welcome to our world irishliz. See your coming from not far from my home town of Runcorn....glad to be out of the dump really.

Ok, the idea of 2 years isn't a bad thing to do at first, and it can be the cheaper option too. Basically see if it ticks all your boxes and move onto the another stage this end and you'll find that too comes in cheaper, rather than doing it from the UK.

Now for the kiddie aspect. Now sorry can't answer for the way the little mites might take to it as my two were 10.5 and 13 when we came and i can assure you they have taken to NZ like a duck to water and wouldn't really have it any other way. Yes they miss there cousins, aunts, uncles and friends. Unfortunately they only have one living grandparent, and to be honest they do miss him, but don't miss him if you get my drift. The only thing i can say is sometimes jealousy drives the guilt trip forward and its only you who can handle it the best way you can. Remember and folks will repeat me, but the world is a smaller place nowadays, with the tinterweb, with cams, and microphones being able to handle what a phone can do. Your family will be able to catch up with your goings on out here at the speed off, well its fast, and you know that, but sometimes you have to reassure folk of its presence.

Anyway good luck with it all, and i'm sure whatever questions you have will be answered here in quick fast time.

Welcome to the forum Liz from another NW bod. I am currently in Warrington but should be on the plane to LA in 6 weeks and then arriving in NZ a week later.

Good luck with the move and if you need any help, just ask.

welcome to the forum. Hopefully given a little time and a bit of "explaining your reasons" they will come round to the idea.

Good luck

Hi irishliz and welcome to the forum.

Congratulations on your OH's joboffer ! Two years is a good timespan and IMO it's a great way to check out if NZ is for you.

Know all about trouble with family (not mine, but MIL) and it's a tough one. In most cases though, love does prevail (after all, it's about you and your family's happiness isn't it ?) and things tend to settle down after a while.

From what I've read here and on other forums, children tend to adapt quite easily once here and most of them seem to be very taken with their new life.

Good luck with your preparations and the process !
