Ok, I know IT has probably been done to death on here and I've read quite a lot of the threads but we're having an undecided moment :o
We've spoken to recruitment agencies and done a web search etc but tbh - no offence meant to any agency bods on here - we take some of what the agency bods say with a pinch of salt. After all it is in their interests financially to get you into a position.
What we want to know is..........
how stable is the IT market in NZ, specifically Christchurch as that is where we want to go to.
how many jobs did you have within the first 2years of emmigrating?
what are the career prospects like, i.e. promotion, career development etc. Are you likely to get passed over for a New Zealander.
Many thanks for all your help.

Depends what your job title is as to whether there is a shortage. What your previous exp is etc etc.
Most IT companies are full of immigrates so would not think it would make any difference to career moves.
There is a lot of movement in Wellington most people stay one year in a job other 10 so varies.
OH has been in the same job since we got here 12 months and he on 6 months contracts and exp another 6 months.
Do a search and you will find loads of information here on the forum.
As to stability who knows what is round the corner, but seems to be demand at the moment again depends on your field of expertise and experience.

IT certainly seems to be going through a growth spurt at the moment. My company is recruiting like crazy. As to what it's like in Christchurch, I don't know. When I was getting ready to come out, all the advice I had was that IT jobs were concentrated in Auckland or Wellington. There obviously are some companies in other cities, but less opportunities. That seems to have been backed up by my experience so far.

We found it very easy for hubby to get work in Auckland. Planning on Christchurch in the longer term, but less movement in the market down there, which is why we are in Auckland for now. Still things do come up...will look again in a couple of years....using Auckland as a good base to see some of North Island for now.
Also agree with comment above....hubby's work is full of immigrants too.

There is IT work in Christchurch but they prefer you to be on the ground there. OH had some interviews lined up there in a few weeks time when we planned to arrive but the agencies all said that there would be a lot more companies interested in him when he is physically on NZ soil.

... is certainly true, I went to the NZ expo in london where there were quite a few enthusiastic agents who took my details and I emailed afterwards, and most said it would be better to be in NZ for interviews
my advice - get lots of agent contacts, let them know when you'll be arriving and try and set up a few interviews before you get here ... :nice1

Cheers guys. We're in the middle of out ITA at the mo., medicals in a couple of weeks...... So hopefully we will be in the position of having permanent residency when we go out there next April.
The big spanner in the works at the mo. is my hubbie being offered a really good [by all appearances so far] job here. Which, if it goes well, will offer us the stability both in lifestyle i.e. 25 min. commute against his current nearly 2hr commute, and financially that we crave. As you can imagine this makes us nervous that we may give up a stable lifestyle and end up with exactly what we used to have here...... redundany after redundancy. My hubby is at an age where if we wanted to come back to the UK he may struggle in the current climate to be re-employed.
Ho hum, a few more sleepless nights on this one methinks :roll

Good Luck with your decision MyrKK. Perhaps you can try the new job and carry on with your plans for emigration.
Further down the line you can then perhaps decide?
With regards to IT work in Christchurch so far I have only used the SEEK website.
Any others recomended?
Also with regards to agents etc any that anyone would recomend ?

Yeah, we're gonna keep going through the process. Stopping now we've got this far would be stupid ioho. If the job went pear shaped then we'd kick ourselves.
seek
trade me
both have vacancies
we also did a search for "IT vacancies in Christchurch" on New Zealand Google. www.google.co.nz
