After much deliberation OH and I have decided to abandon thoughts of moving to the Dunedin area and go back to our original plan of moving to the Timaru area.
We have been looking on the real estate sites to get an idea of the propeties available and have noticed a lot of properties available in Temuka. We had originally planned on living in Geraldine but wondered why so many properties were for sale in Temuka. Is there something we're not being told about the town? Is it a ghost town? Is it inhabited by aliens? Or has it been built on a sacred burial ground and is now cursed?
Any info would be great.

Hi there
Good to see we aren't the only ones looking at the Timaru area (potential job for hubby there). Like yourself we are trying to get more insider info on the place, understand it is fairly industrialized and quiet on the residential front. I have seen a few threads about Timaru when I searched the forum so worth using the search facility. I guess it comes down to want you want from an area in terms of amenities, leisure facilities, restaurants, shopping and entertainment etc. Probably also worth searching the internet for any info on the place to get a feel for it. Will keep you posted if we glean more info.

we passed through it, it looked ok, but the fact that the rail way line blocks the beach may be why its not as popular.
the houses were reasonable, but the KFC was dirty, this was a year ago, and we ended up in Invercargill.
I think that you should not make your mind up till you come - get a temporary base and then you can explore. most none CBD areas have jobs aplenty so you can check the areas/look for work at the same time.

I really like Geraldine as far as we have visited it often but not lived there. I could quite happily live there and it's earmarked as a place to keep our eye on. However, I quite like quiet backwaters, rural towns and Geraldine is just that, imho.
Timaru? YUK.. sorry, didn't like it at all. I guess the recommended "scenic walk" *cough* that took us along "beautiful Caroline Bay" :uhoh and it's equally beautiful cargo port thingy :o, up along a "rural" walk to the clifftops (past the strange factory in a bay with strange coloured smoke belching from a huge chimney, oh, and the three headed-penguin), up through a council estate inhabited mainly by pitbulls, across a railway line and back up a zillion stairs to the High Street... yeah, loved Timaru.... :D
Oh, and apparently the most common question asked by the locals is "what church are you with" - but now I'm just being petty....

Thanks for being so honest and candid, Moorf :laugh . We will probably base ourselves temporarily in Timaru as I hope to be working at the hospital and then we can spend time looking around the area. Admittedly we do like the look and sound of Geraldine and if we find the right property that could be the place for us.

Am thinking of moving to Timaru as husbands family there. Does anyone have anything good to say about it!! My husband loves it, but I really wanted a few more opinions! I know Moorf doesn't think much of it and thats fine, but if anyone has some good points???
