Most people will already be well aware of this, but I wanted to warn forumites who are here on a work visa, about their rights regarding health care here. I have been having trouble with an Auckland clinic who insisted on charging me as a visitor even though I had a work permit. I now have a residence visa, so this is not an issue anymore, but I was sure I didn't need to pay the extra because I had a work permit. In my quest to get this clarifed, I discovered that even at the management level, there is a belief that you are not entitled to publicly funded health care until you are a resident.

I had to download the relevant information from the MInistry of Health web page which clearly states that work permit holders (permit must be for 2 years or more) are entitled to publicly funded health care. I am now dealing with the head office to have all my overpayments refunded. (this can add up as visitors are usually charged about $90 per visit to a doctor.) and have asked them to send a directive to all their clinics so that staff are aware of this rule.

I am thinking I am not the only person in NZ who has paid more than necessary, so I'm posting here so that if you have had this experience you can get your refund.

This is one of the most important warnings I've come across. Thank you for sharing it & using your unfortunate dilemma as an example. Good luck with your crusade.

Yes, well done on sorting this out. :clap

Has anyone else on the forum maybe paid when they shouldn't have?

Cheers

My wife has recently encountered this situation, she arrived on a WHV and was issued a one year work permit, after she applied for PR she applied for a 2 year work permit to make sure there would be enough time left for the PR to be processed, she was approved but when her passport came back it had another one year work permit, I called NZIS and they said that her status was that of a 2 year work permit but that the recent permit was only good for another 12 months because she already had a work permit, it didn't make sense to me so I asked for a letter confirming what was said, they advised that they don't issue such letters and said to have a health care provider contact them if they needed to confirm it.

I wrote a letter to her doctors office and provided a printout of her NZIS record from the online services page, so far everything is good but I'll be happy when she gets PR, we have a baby coming in February or March and I don't want to have any issues with medical care.

Great! It's nice to know this kind of thing can be worked out eventually when it happens.
