My OH has been offered a job and will be working in Wellington. I think we'll probably move to the city for the first month before finding where we want to rent. Has anyone got any advice on places in Wellington and also about some of the more outlying areas, particularly Porirua and Paraparauma? We'd need to be near to a good school as we've got two daughters as aged five and eight.

Hi Charles,

I am planning to move to Wellington too, and I've found the following threads interesting - maybe you'll find them interesting too:

Hello there

This is our first post since arriving in Wellington!

My OH works in Kelburn which is a great suburb, has a good school but is very expensive. We are renting in Northland at the moment, the school has a good name but I think our two (William 9 and Martha 6) will be going to Cardinal McKeefry school in Wilton. We went for a look around the other day and seemed like a very happy, focused place (I think the artwork on the walls says something about a school). Karori Normal school is huge (about 800 pupils), Wadestown has a good name as has Brooklyn. If you're not worried about being in the catchment area for Wellington College / Wellington College for Girls then Cashmere Avenue school in Khandallah is meant to be good.

Hope some of this helps, where are you planning to rent in Wellington? Do feel free to PM me anytime.

Best wishes,

Andrea Matt William and Martha

Hello,

We have been renting in Wadestown for four months since arriving from the UK. Our sons, 9 and 11, attend Wadestown School and they have settled very well. I have heard that Karori Normal School and Kelburn are good, also Northland. We are not sure where we will eventually buy so we are busy looking at secondary schools for our eldest son.

i love it out where i live, in miramar. we live on the hills (not the flat..) and we have lovely views and its through the tunnel to seatoun/karaka bay etc or round the bay to lyall bay...ive never lived so close to the sea before! 5 minutes max. trip into town is 15-20 minutes max even with heavy traffic..i think thats pretty good.
amenities are good..everything you need in miramar 'village' itself and kilbirnie very close..10 minute drive.

thats my two cents :D
