Timbo,
Here is another great IT link for jobs in NZ: http://it.seek.co.nz/

My husband and I are both in the IT field and seeking jobs in Wellington. I've been told that a job offer will expedite our EOI processing. However, most job openings have a note that only those with the legal right to work in NZ will be considered. The US NZ Marketing Director said that was only posted to protect the companies from legal issues associated with hiring illegal immigrants. Still, how likely is it that companies will hire someone outside the country before they have PR?

I would appreciate advice from anyone on the best way to search for a job remotely. Here's what I have done so far: I have posted my resume on the Positively Wellington Business Web site (http://www.positivelywellingtonbusiness.co.nz/mainsite/). I have registered my resume with a couple of the local recruiting companies (Duncan Ryan and Robert Walters). And I've submitted an application for one job with a mulitnational company. I haven't heard anything yet but it has only been about 10 days (and this was during the holidays!).

Are companies willing to do an initial interview over the phone? If they want to interview you in person, are they likely to pay for you to travel to NZ? Would it be worthwhile for me to plan a one-week trip to Wellington and then try to arrange interviews for the week I am there?

Many people on this forum seem to have taken a leap of faith and just moved over there without jobs - very courageous! We're hoping to have at least one job offer before making such a plunge!

Any thoughts are appreciated.

hi roadrunner

my husband ric and i found to our delight that new zealand companies do phone interviews as well as personal ones. he was interviewed by a panel of university admins in november 2003 and that was at a time when we were just trying our luck with job placements before we even thought of submitting our expressions of interest. i think he was shortlisted for the position, but of course we didn't have the visa yet then, so it didnt come through for him. but yes, they do have phone interviews, and some of our forum friends have gone over there, looked for jobs while there, and have been interviewed and hired all in a matter of weeks.

yep, leap of faith it is. but i believe IT people like you shouldn't have any trouble finding jobs there, even if you just submit resumes and applications online. however i do think nz employers do need the reassurance that you will get your visa before they can offer you the employment. RIc has 2 HRD's waiting for his change in status before they contact him again with definite job offers. it's what some of the forum people called the "Catch 22" thing... you need the job offer to get the visa for points purposes, but you get the job offer only if you have the visa! confusing, ain't?

good luck!

Roadrunner,
As you know the IT field is very varied and some skills within the field are much sought after more than others. I for instance am needed the world over, but the world is full of Systems Administrators, Tech Support staff etc, so why would an NZ company hire me over a kiwi?

If your speciality is in a rare urgently needed field then i assume you can get a job ove the phone, or land lucky. Most likely though, my experience tells me that you have to make your contatcs and then make a trip over for the sole purpose of meeting agencies/employers. They generally don't take you seriously until your there.

I land in AKL on Feb 1st, and yet still no-one will arrange a firm interview/meeting date with me until i contact them upon arrival.

Keep posting your CV and Good cover letter to agencies/employers and..
be savvy, follow up a week later with a telephone call asking if they have recieved your details? Ask them what they thought your chances are? have a chat.
here is a good site that i use.

Good luck with your job search, but i would suggest in your opening e-mail to potential employers or agencies, that you tell them you can be available for face to face interview at their convenience. I'm sure you will learn that a trip over is the best way foward. its whether it suits your personell plans/finances.

Excellent information, thank you.

As soon as we have had our telephone interview (which we are told will be by the end of this month) I am going to start submitting my CV.

I am both financial services and IT related and have been busy getting qualifications to back up my experience. It was a delight to see the revised ICT Specialisations now covering the areas I have most of my experience in.

Thanks Rimbo and Annie,
Sounds like I need to be a bit more aggressive in the new year and that I should schedule a trip to NZ soon.

Does anyone have any experience working for the NZ government? I understand that it might be possible for someone with a PR to work for the NZ government. I have done work for the US government (working for a private company but contracting to the govt) and had some interesting assignments as a result. I wasn't sure if the same thing was possible in NZ.

Do govt jobs in NZ pay reasonably close to private sector salaries?

hi roadrunner

someone on this forum posted a thread about wages in nz; as i understood it, govt employees get higher wages, plus benefits. is this right, kiwis? i might have just remembered the ministers and the prime minister's but what i noted actually was that they earned more annually than a doctor did in nz. that's why i said to myself, hmmm, maybe i should apply to the ministry of health there?

the brits complain that wages in nz are crap, which might be true, if you compared gbp with nz$, buying power that is. to many of other migrants, the nz$ can hold its own. i suppose if 1 gbp = 108.00++Php, while 1 nz$ = 40++Php, i might say nz wages are crap too, but i can't. coz i still convert in pesos :laugh . anything is higher than ours! :P (of course the us$ is still 56++Php)

take heart and see what else you can have in nz that won't cost anything. i heard there are a lot of those things there. :nice1

:cheers
