I noticed this hotel deal for Auckland Formule 1 hotel, in downtown Auckland. $69 a night up until Sept 30.

Not a fancy hotel, but not a packpackers either. I think its basic but clean and has a microwave and cooktop so you can save abit of money on not eating out. (and doesnt cost thatmuch more than a private room in a backpackers. )
For anyone arriving in the country who doesnt have accommodation sorted, this might be a good option for the first few days.
It says: All rooms include either one double or two single beds. Rooms offer views overlooking Auckland city, and include private bathroom with shower, cooktop and microwave. theyhave a weekly special of $62 a night if you stay 7 days.

I dont work for these guys, just sounded like a good deal to me, and there are sometimes people on the forum asking about affordable accommodation in Auckland.

Hi, leaving for Auckland in October and also found a couple of cheap deals - if you not to fussy there is motor park just 15 minutes outside Auckland called Avondale Motor Park: avondalemotorpark@xtra.co.nz and they quoted us $40 per night for 2 adults sleeping in a static caravan - that's even cheaper than the backpackers in Auckland - and it has a cooker and fridge although you do need to go to the shower block for showers. We have decided to hire a camper van as it gives use the mobility as well as freedom when job hunting - only $49 per night. Works out cheaper in the long run than staying in backpackers and hiring car - and you can always negotiate with the motor home parks for rates! With the exchange rate we need to save every cent!

I usually I stay at Motor lodge in Parnell for $60. -(ask the guy for a special price.)

Suite: Bedroom,/living room/kitchen/bathroom and patio.
Walking distance to all restaurants and boutiques and the museum. I love it!

Many thanks kanatakiwi. We were going to stay in a studio in the CBD for up to a week, but this is almost as good and half the price :) .
