I have just found and devoured most of this site over the last couple of days and have to say WOW! It's really great. My hubby and I are preparing (Hoping) to make the big move from Scotland with our two young kids 6 and 3 asap. I had a couple of questions that I just wanted to ask and if anyone can relate to there own experience or give any feedback I'd appreciate it.

we seem to have 140 points on EOI without job offer (although few interviews lined up) and wondered should we submit or wait for job offer? How flexiblie are employers about start dates? Bizarre question about police checks - we both lived in small African country as volunteers from 95-98 and getting police checks is a nightmare, are they absolutely necessary?

That'll do for starters I think

Thanks in advance for any info

Hey,

Welcome to the forum. Whatever is asked for in the process has to be submitted, so I would say that police checks are a definate. My experience of applying/looking into jobs in NZ is that they would prefer to meet up with you when you arrive. However, there are a lot of people on this forum ( who will probably post),who have gone over to NZ with a job offer in place, so its more than possible ( perhaps I'm just looking into the wrong jobs!!). We applied without job offers, but I cant help but think that your application would be stronger with a job offer....I may be wrong, Im sure you'll get lots of advice from others who have been in this situation.

Good Luck

For the police check question, here is the information from NZIS:
R4.5.1 Evidence of character
a. Applicants aged 17 or over must provide police certificates for their country of citizenship and for every country in which they have lived for 12 months or more (whether on one visit or intermittently) in the 10 years before the date they lodge* their application.

b. Certificates must be less than 6 months old when the application is lodged*.

c. If the applicant requires a certificate from a country that does not issue individual police certificates and is not listed on the NZIS leaflet Obtaining a Police Certificate, the visa or immigration officer may proceed to assess the application and obtain any necessary clearances before a decision is made.

d. If a police certificate is not available from a particular country, the applicant must provide a separate statutory declaration in both English and the applicant's first language, which must:

i detail the applicant's attempts to obtain a police certificate; and

ii state whether the applicant and any accompanying family members have been convicted, or found guilty of or charged with any offences against the law of that country; and

iii be corroborated

Thanks to you both. We are following up police checks and are visiting the embassy next week in London to try and get as much written info as possible. Difficulty is that was such a long time ago now. Obviously we have no convictions so seems a bit frsutraing but hey we are committed to doing this so am sure many more obstacles to come. Good news is hubby got interview lined up for job in Chrsitchurch so things moving at a fair old speed here.

Thanks again

As far as I am aware, as long as you have the required number of points for EOI, you might as well apply. Only difference job offer would then make, is your application being fast tracked. If you apply and are selected from pool, you can contact them with details of employer etc, if you later have a job offer. They are then supposed to assign you a case officer within 10 days and you get fast tracked. We found it was easier to get job offer, if potential employers find you have already started the ball rolling by doing EOI. Employers are often quite flexible about dates etc...there are a couple of other new threads with regard to this posted in last 2 days, worth having a read.
