Hi Guys
we were over the moon the other day when bev recieved a tax refund for $1400 THEN I OPENED MY LETTER AND IT SAID I OWED THEM $600 as i pay tax only on my wages and it is deducted at source i couldnt understand this so i rang them. The gist of it seems to be although i,m a m tax code there are different rates for that code and as i swapped jobs 4 times in the tax year they didnt charge me the right amount. So beware anybody that has swapped jobs a few times (KIM):D you might get a nasty bill in the post.:nice1

:( Cardy - Be Glad it was that away round!
Rob Got a cheque for $600.........................I got one from Family credit saying I owed them $1,400!!!!!!!!!!:wah
So everyone beware - if you go over the allotted amount you can earn and get family credit (and we went over only a bit) They ask for a lot of it back!
I rang them, they said that we had earn't $1000 too much (rob having to work OT) Even though I had rang them each time he changed jobs!
So I said - does that mean that I now owe you $250 for this year? (as there was a statement up to July 15th included in the letter) he said not exactly - if we earn't under the expected amount then it was ok - but if we went over, even by a little they would calculate how much I owed next year.
Aparenty you can put a hold on being paid monthy etc, and get it paid at the end of the tax year, So I have asked them to do this - since I have just started a new job and I am getting more money. (not a great letter to get on your first day of your new job :( )
As I am not that sure that Cardy is the same as us - not that well off that we can just find $$$$ under the matress!! - luckly I have till Feb to find it! and if I had not have managed to get a Job that is earning me twice as much as I was on when they worked out that I owed them this money!!!!I would be in serious trouble!
but its still $1,400 that I will not be able to put towards my tickets to the UK and that really &^^% me off, and we don't live frivously - infact we haven't been out since xmas! we took Jason to the Cinema 2 weeks ago and thats the first time we have been out as a family since xmas too!!
So think carefully about accepting Family Tax Credit - If you are near the threshold - maybe taking the money at the end of the tax year in a lump sum will stop you getting an unwelcomed bill.

I think M code is only for person who does NOT swap jobs in a year, so they can calculate your tax based on your steady income at the one workplace. If you jump around with different rates of pay at different jobs, that is definitely going to muck things up. :uhoh Most kiwis I know who do contract work or change jobs etc, always try to keep some in savings as they know they will have to pay some at the end of the tax year.

The jobs going great - when the work load gets a bit heavier I'll feel a bit better - I'm not used to doing hardly anything, and got my own office!:nice1
and 3 meetings in one week (with cookies!) I'll be needing a bigger uniform:o
I will be saving every Cent for a while till I have both the amount for IRD and the tickets for Rachels wedding.
Heres hoping thats it as I don't think I can take any more bad news!
