We leave the states in 3 days (freaking out!) and we're trying to open a bank account in NZ, but they require an IRD number. We have 18 month work visas...so do we have an IRD number automaticaly, or do we need to apply seperately for that?

You don't say what bank you are working with but I know they don't all require that so check around. Lots of people here used Westpac to set up an account before they arrived.

Ditto...WestPac didn't require this IRD #. They assume the highest tax rate until you prove otherwise.
