We are definately moving. Now, if we can just figure out the rules on the paperwork.
It seems that we may have the points for the PR, but maybe not. OH is a plumber and we may or may not get points for his quals. If we do, we have over 140. If not....
I am waiting for passport renewal (any minute now, I hope) so that I can send our stuff over to NZQA and PGDB for assessment.
We want to move by March 08.
I am thinking we will not have time to get the PR by Mar08.
So what are our options?
If OH somehow gets a job offer, can we get a temp. work visa, move over and then apply for PR?
Can we come over to "visit" with RT tickets, find a job, get a temp work visa, and stay? and, then apply for PR--all without leaving??
Obviously, would prefer to have the PR in hand before we move around the world, but, sometimes, if possible, you just have to go for it.
Is this possible?
Thanks in advance for your help

I'm also looking to move in March 08.
I've submitted the EOI, but no word yet. 115 points, no job and my husband hasn't finished his Computer Science degree yet. That makes ME the employable one.:laugh
(I do have a degree and 6- 8 years of experience in Biotech/Molec Bio but I don't know how much of a shortage that really is. :( )
If that doesn't pan out or isn't moving fast enough I plan to get either a student or visitor visa with RT tickets and take it from there.
I have a friend who is from NZ who is trying to get her boyfriend into the country (she does all his paperwork) and she seems to think that getting a student or visitor visa and changing up from there isn't much of a big deal.
Scares me a little!
If you can get a job offer I'm thinking you can get a Work to Residence visa if you aren't able to get PR.
It's certainly scary, but it seems possible to just 'go for it' if you've done some pre-planning and setting the process in motion.
Anyone who has actually done this of course would give much better information than I...:p

I was advised to apply for a work visa as well as PR while I was still in the UK as the work visa would come through quicker . That way I could travel to NZ on the work visa, get a job - and then update the PR info (which would have definately swayed it - we were going for de-facto partnership). As it turned out, I got the work visa AND had my PR approved before I even left the UK. :D

I didn't have one when I got my work visa (but then I work in I.T.).

Make sure you arrive after march 31, I think thats the cut off date for the tax here, worth finding out what the date is. as you could be liable to pay nz tax on any income you have had overseas for the last year, Basically they give you a tax credit for the amount of tax you have paid overseas, and then tax you on the income you have had at the NZ rate, it can be quite a shock, higher rate of taxes start at around NZD $40,000 which is not much if you have been earning in europe or the US.
I think they may be a tax amnesty on at the moment, as so many people have been kicking up a fuss about it, but I am not sure, always safe to check.
you wil get entry easy if your OH is a plumber, even if he doent get any points for his qualifications.

I hope they will give us easy entry, but so far it has been a hassle to even get the info to get his quals assessed. The Plumbing Board won't answer questions!! (no email or phone calls please) Without the help of the great people of this forum, we would be completely confused with no one to help!!
You guys are great!!
And, we need his 50 points for qualifications to get us to an acceptable range with the EOI

A plumber still needs to have enough points to be invited to apply for Permanent Residency. Entry is no easier for a plumber than for anyone else.
Plumbers are on the long term shortage list so one good thing is that there should be little problem in finding a job offer once in NZ.
Finding a suitable , properly paid job offer in NZ from overseas is tricky. Many employers will state 'come and see us once arrived in NZ'.
However, it is possible. My husband had two offers via phone interview before we did our reccy.
Ashby - you cannot apply for a work visa/permit without a job offer. You must have the job offer first.
If your plumbing husband can obtain a full time job offer whilst outside of NZ, then he can apply for a temporary work visa. He will still need to provide proof of his plumbers qualifications and both he and the employer will need to uplife the PGDB limited licence.
An NZQA level 3 should gain you 50 points for a basic trade qualification. Fingers crossed on that one.
People have come into NZ on a visitors visa [ with return air tickets] , found skilled jobs and then applied for a work permit. So it is perfectly possible. Once living and working in NZ , you could then submit an EOI for PR. Others have done it before you. There is a couple in our village, a carpenter, that did just that.
When are you thinking to arrive?
and to where ?

Sorry, I just PMed you some questions you properly answered here!!
We really want to be there by Jan-Mar 2008. Hoping by March.
We like Wellington and the South Island.
Guess we could love any locale inside NZ!! At least initially!
