Anyone got any experiences of working with pre-schoolers in NZ?

I'm a qualified Nursery Nurse (although that term's a bit old fashioned now) in the past I've worked with under 8's in Social Services, schools and pre-school nurseries etc and I'm looking to do the same in NZ. Working as a childminder currently.

I know early years educators are on the long-term skills shortage list, but that is way above my qualification. Do the teachers have assistants?

I've searched :uhoh all over the WWW for info and I can't find any relevant info at all. HELP!

Thanks, Carol

The schools have Teacher Aides; Lupin has just got a job as one I think, so maybe you'll get a reply. Pre-schools and Kindergartens obviously have staff but I don't think all need the ECE qualification. Hope someone can give you more accurate information.

Yes she is, but we have taken the job in order to get the paperwork sorted to get us into NZ. The pay and location are not exactly what we wanted but getting there is more important at the moment.

Hi Carol

I am a nursery nurse too and luckily had my qualification recognised by 2 schools when I went for interviews as a teacher aide.

There always seems to be jobs advertised in the local paper for teacher aides, pay isnt fantastic [I get just under $14 an hour ],and no pay in the holidays ,but I work same hours as my kids and get all the holidays ,so no child care to pay for.

My first job was at a primary school just working mornings ,now I work the full school day at a high school.

Good luck !

Hi Carol
Only just seen this thread i am a nursery nurse too and i am working as an early years teacher here in auckland.I have managed to get jobs working in early years here as they are very short of teachers here, so although they may be looking for new zealand 3 year qualification you can often get the job (not in kindergarten though you have to be qualified) or do relieving through Select agency. These websites may help.
