I have seen some stories posted (but can't seem to find them) that in some cases NZIS will offer a work permit insted of PR depending on your percieved ability to settle.

So, after you file your EOI, do they tell you this when they invite you to apply or after they have evaluated your application?

Thanks!

hi chris,

this is from the NZIS website:

The process for gaining residence as a Skilled Migrant
There are two stages of applying for residence under our Skilled Migrant Category:

stage one - you send us an Expression of Interest in applying for residence. In this Expression of Interest you assess yourself against a set of factors that define a skilled migrant. This assessment helps you determine the points you’d qualify for
stage two - we decide whether we’ll invite you to apply for residence in New Zealand based on the points you qualified for.

Here's the process in more detail...

Step 1: You complete an initial self-assessment
You can complete the Skilled Migrant Quick Check to help you decide whether or not it’s worth submitting an Expression of Interest.

Step 2: You submit an Expression of Interest
If you meet the prerequisites, you can complete and submit an Expression of Interest. In this you’ll tell us about your health, character, and English language ability, as well as the factors that will earn you points.

We recommend that you submit your Expression of Interest online. It’s cheaper than using the printed form, you can pay by credit card online, and you’ll know immediately whether your Expression of Interest has been accepted into the Pool. You can also check the status of your Expression of Interest and update your details even after your Expression of Interest has been submitted into the Pool.

If you are unable to submit an Expression of Interest online, you can download the printed form in PDF format from our website or obtain a copy from one of our offices. Completed forms must be sent to Wellington, New Zealand for processing.

Step 3: We rank Expressions of Interest and invite those with the top points to apply for residence Expressions of Interest submitted over a number of weeks will be pooled and ranked from highest to lowest points. It is not a case of first in, first served.

We will rank Expressions of Interest in terms of points claimed and, following some checking, those with the highest points may be invited to lodge an application for residence.

If your Expression of Interest is not selected from the Pool the first time it will remain in the Pool for three months. If it is still unsuccessful, we will advise you that your Expression of Interest has been withdrawn from the Pool. You can lodge another Expression of Interest, along with the applicable fee, if you wish. (Expressions of Interest submitted to the Pool up to and including 3 June 2004 will remain in the Pool for six months.)

Step 4: We ask you to apply for residence
If you’ve been successful, we’ll send you an official Invitation to Apply for residence. After you’ve been invited to apply you’ll need to send us all the necessary documents to support the claims you made in your Expression of Interest – such as passports, qualifications and relevant certificates.

Step 5: Decision-making
We’ll assess your application for residence against Government residence policy and look at your ability to settle successfully and make a real contribution to New Zealand’s social and economic development.

We’ll also undertake to verify some of the information you’ve told us in your Expression of Interest.

And depending on how you’re able to demonstrate your ability or potential to successfully settle in New Zealand:

your application may be approved and you’ll be granted a Residence Visa or Permit or you may instead be granted a Work Visa or Permit, which will enable you to establish yourself in skilled employment in New Zealand and help you gain residence or your application may be declined.

Step 6: Welcome to New Zealand – we want to stay in touch with you
If you’re not already in New Zealand, we’ll arrange a Welcome Pack on your arrival, as well as providing you with a contact person who can help you access information you need to help you settle in.

On a more formal basis, we’ll follow up with a questionnaire after three months, so that we can use your feedback to help us help future skilled migrants.

hope this answer your questions :D

Thanks Jes!

That was very helpful. So I guess it will be a while before I even know if we will get a PR invite or a work permit. The work permit scares me a bit, but I need to learn more about it. I am concerned they might change the rules once we are there on a work permit.

We don't have a job offer so I really hope we get assesed well enough that we get PR. I have a PhD and have worked as a lecturer which is an area of absoulte shortages so I am certainly hoping that will help!
