Has anyone gotten either eyeglasses or sunglasses filled in NZ with a prescription from US or UK ?
How expensive are glasses in NZ and do kiwi opticians readily accept the RX? I need new sunglasses but am not sure I have time to deal with this before we leave the US! :roll
Thanks!

Hi Christine.
Pm the Hodges as Clare works for an opticians in Auckland and should be able to give you all the info. I say pm her as she is then guaranteed to respond as not all the threads get noticed by everyone ( Me included)
Kind regards

I had my Canadian prescription filled here, no problem with the prescription, but the glasses definitely cost more here. And when my OH broke his frames we had the Canadian optemistrist mail us new frames and got the optician here to pop the fglass into them, which they did kindly , no charge.

OH had an eye test yesterday cost $68, looked at new frames and they range for around $200 - $350 with lens starting at around $188. He also enquired about new lens for sunglasses and they where $350 ish I think.
One comment OH did make was it was the most thorough eye examination he has ever had, took 40 mins +

We discovered this place.... http://www.eyewear-direct.co.nz/ you can do it online or pop in and try frames on if in Auckland.
Hubby got his specs from there recently, they also do sight tests, but I am not sure what they cost, as he got his tested elsewhere, again around $70 mentioned previously. I have got a very weird prescription which we had him look at, and he reckoned even mine would be possible!

Wow, thanks for that--big help!
My optometrist has a pretty good collection of frames to choose from, but invariably the whole package--frames, lenses, uv coating, etc., ends up costing $350 and usually more!! That's just ridiculous ( and if I wanted to do this right now, I would have to schedule an appointment for selection then an appointment in two weeks or so to pick them up when they are ready...geeze).
My thinking (hoping) was that I could get reasonably priced ones in NZ and hopefully better quality for UV protection since NZ opticians are more aware of the sun issues there.

Haven't used my UK prescription for normal giggs, but i did for a new pair of sunnies, and the cost was $600 for a pair of Bolle. Frame ws $200, lenses $320, and polarisation $80. Now we were lucky as wifes health care insurance paid for half the cost.
