In between browsing this forum , I am reading a book by Rose Tremain called ' the colour' (what an exciting life im leading at the moment) Its quite good and its about a couple that emigrate to NZ during the goldrush and its set all around christchurch and canterbury. Even though its a novel it has some really good descriptions of the place back then.
kind of makes you realise how tough it was , they even had to build their own houses :? but on the plus side they only paid a pound for their land - bargain.
anyway just thought id recommend it for people with too much time on their hands.
Has anybody else read anything set in NZ worth reading lately?

Hi there,

There was another thread about good NZ reading some time back in which Timbo (& I think others) recommended Kiwis Might Fly by Polly Evans. It's quite a good quick read, one for the girls maybe since she's in search of the real Kiwi bloke. Does she find him? Could fill a forum discussing that one...

I read The Bone People by Keri Hulme a while back - it won the Booker prize in 1985 and is a NZ modern classic, worth a pop & lots of Maori context though quite disconcerting and bizarre. Otherwise, look in the back section of the Lonely Planet guide where they give NZ authors with recommendations.

The pavlova paradise books by Austin Mitchell are really good for getting an outsiders or newcomers view on NZ and kiwis.

Barry Crump was one of NZ's best authors, he wrote dozens of book with tales of the great outdoors. The Speights man is a sort of copy of Barry Crump.
