How does it affect the process with NZIS if you have a firm job offer but it's not on the list?

OH has city & guilds in furniture/cabinet making - (on the list) BUT he works for the prison service, training prisoners up to UK NVQ standard in furniture manufacture & production. Would this count?

Would have tried getting in as a skilled migrant BUT they've upped the salary level to NZ$50,000, and starting salary for Instructors in the Dept of Corrections is 47k - aaaagh!

Any help/advice gratefully accepted.

Have you thought of coming in on a 2yr work visa seeing you have a job offer - if that is correct, and applying down the PR route at a later stage.

Realised after I posted I hadn't mentioned it was a hypothetical question. Had no offers yet - not even applied yet! But I like to come up with hypothetical problems and resolve them before REAL problems come up to get me!

I knew there'd be another way to get to NZ, but sometimes you can't see the wood for the trees.

Thanks Kim, Carol

Hi there,

I just wanted to say that I got a job offer while I was in the UK and my profession, and neither is the job, on the skills shortage list. It was the only way I could get in the country.

It still can still be done, but it just takes the right employer.

Have you checked trademe jobs to see if there's any suitable on there. You might get lucky...

Thanks Hodges, good to know there's alternative ways in!

Andy works for HM Prison Service, and will be working for NZ Dept of Corrections, we're just waiting for the right job. I assumed we'd be ok, but I get nervous when I assume things!

Thanks, Carol

Did the employer have to then prove to NZIS that they had tried and failed to find anyone locally? How much hassle was this for them - i.e. are you one of only two specialists in the country, or was it more of a formality on their part.

The 50k is the guidelines for coming in on a WTR visa. It has moved from 45k

Hi Jezza,

Not sure actually. I know that they phoned NZIS to discuss the terms of the offer to make sure it satisfied NZIS and in that conversation they probably discussed local skills, but I don't think anything was done formally. I don't think that it was much hassle though.

Just to be safe though, for each case, I recommend that the employer phones NZIS.
