Hi,
My name is Juanjuan. I'm now living and working in Ireland. I am a Registered General Nurse, both here in Ireland and in China. I'm originally from China and my husband is Dutch.
We are going to start the paperwork for Skilled Immigration on the basis of me being a Nurse.
Is there any Nurse out there that can give me some tips and advice on where to start? Which papers/applications to file first, followed by.....etc.
We have a fair idea. However, knowing all the bureaucratic hassle I went through here in Ireland I wonder if someone can advice me on the whole process.
Thank you,
Juanjuan

apply for your nz nursing registration, can download the forms from their website, www.nursingcouncil.org.nz
you need to pay the NMC to fill in the form confirming you're registered with them. you need references etc. Follow the council's instructions to the letter and I'd send everything recorded delivery!
apply for your police checks now and ask for 3 copies so you have one each for immigration, nursing council and your new employer.
Good luck and let me know if you need any more advice.

Correct me if I'm wrong:
1st) Nursing Council registration
2nd) Police Check - 3 copies
At the same time, but don't they expire after six months?
2.5) Maybe IELTS test as I'm not a native English speaker.
3rd EOI (Expression of Interest)
4th) Application Skilled Migrant
5th) Medicals
We are planning to move, if all OK, by June/July '08.
Can anyone tell me if I'm forgetting something, and/or how long things can take.
How long does the Nursing Council normally take? And remember I might be an Irish nurse but my initial registration and education is Chinese.
Thank you guys for your links and advice. Already helpful.

Police checks can take up to 40 days to come back, I guess it depends on whether or not you plan to apply for nurse reg,a job or submit your ITA within the next 6 months. ( you need the police check for ITA but not for EOI ) If not, then it's too early to apply for police checks as like you say, they will have expired before you can use them. I'm talking here about UK police checks, you will probably need to supply checks from other countries you have lived in.
Sorry, can't advise you on IELTS, I think you'll need that at ITA stage.
You'll get NZ nurse registration and you then " activate" it by applying for an annual practising cert. I found this quite confusing, it's renewed annually, on a date determined by your date of birth. So, you may get an APC which is only valid for 3 months and if you haven't started working as a nurse in NZ by the time it expires, you have to send in all your references and stuff to the council again. You need personal and professional references, transcripts direct from college and confirmation of NMC registration.
They lost stuff that I sent recorded delivery and wouldn't accept one reference as it wasn't dated, but when they actually started processing my NZ registration they were quite quick.
I got the job first and then applied for everything else, it depends what order you're doing things in. Your ITA is rushed through if you have a job offer. Some employers like you to have started the nurse registration process before interview.
Medicals last.
In the meantime you could collate info for the ITA. For example, if you're claiming points for work experience, you'll need references ( I had notarised copies made of my originals I had for NZ nursing council ) payslips, letters from prev.empoyers or old employment contracts.
All the best,
K
