Just a comment really...

On the MAF site they restrict importation of all fruit by travellers and immigrants to prevent importation of fruit fly which they say they do not have because of its geopgraphic isolation.

But does NZ really import NO FRUIT from other countries and produce all of its own?

If so, I find this exciting as we live in a time, in the US and likely the UK, where we have much of our winter produce shipped in from NZ, Chile and South Africa to keep our pantries stocked with fresh fruit all year which can be a tremendous burden on oil consumption/air and water quality shipping it such distances.

NZ does import fruit - but it's specially treated in bulk to eradicate fruit fly and larvae. But, I believe, that's not a practical solution for the small amounts brought in through airports, hence the ban.
