OH has just been told at work that you need to book the ferry over Christmas vacation period, otherwise will not get place for car on ferry as very busy. Anyone got any thoughts on this?

Trouble is we won't know for definite what week we will be travelling until October time :(

We went from Wellington to Picton on christmas eve, but we did book in advance. It was busy and our ferry was about 5 hrs late so take something to do. We were lucky enough to have a camper van, so the wait wasn't too bad. I have to say though that everyone was really chilled out about the wait, families played games on the dock and everyone chatted to each other and it was quite enjoyable. If you book in October you should be ok, especially if you are flexible with your travel dates/times.

The ferry crossing was beautiful, :nice1

It can get very busy over the holiday periods, but you should still be able to get on one of the ferries - you might get stuck with paying for a full price ticket at some ungodly hour of the morning though.

Check the website at www.interislander.co.nz (http://www.interislander.co.nz). You can punch in the dates you want to travel and check the availability. That way you can spot when the cheaper tickets start to go. Two years ago I could have told you myself, since I ran the systems that managed the bookings and had access to the raw figures :)

With a credit card you can book from anywhere in the world - the "ticket" is simply a booking notification with a bar code on it and once you've paid for your tickets you can either print it straight from the website, or get it emailed and print it later.

P.S. Red is right - the trip through Malborough sounds is beautiful - and one of the "must do's" in New Zealand.
