Hey,
Think there is a lot of us on here that are job hunting in NZ at the moment, thought it might be good to start a thread so we can both support each other.
Ill start, hubby has 3 glazing firms interested in employing him in hawkes bay, hoping to have telephone interviews at some point ( when recovered-poorly at the minute), I have been looking and cant find anything in hawkes bay...think Im dreaming to think my dream job is going to come up in the exact location I want...so ill just keep looking, I will do anything when I arrive to earn money....as long as one of us have a job offer.
Where are you all upto??

I,m looking for a primary teaching job. Not in a city, semi-rural is the correct term I believe. Had a very positive interview with an agency so it's wait and see now what comes up. At this stage we're being quite choosy about where we'll consider going; that may change as time goes on if no offers! OH still not 100% sure about the move which is making things a bit difficult!

Hi Carey, What area are you hoping to settle in? When do you plan to go over there? Will the agent just be getting back to you if anything comes up?? I work in the early years field also...what reservations has OH got???

Hi, also job hunting at the moment - we arrive in NZ in the first week in October, and so far have had a number of requests to meet employees on arrival :) but so far no job offers (15 interviews lined up:clap ).
Everyone (understandably) wants to see me in person first. I am in the hospitality industry and have been applying for position via the Seek website. As I said in a previous thread, I have been very up front on application that I have submitted an EOI but am hoping for a job offer to get a work permit in the interim. My not having the required permits in place doesn't seem to have put anyone off, the turn downs I have received have mostly been due to the fact that I wasn't available immediately for an interview.
I am a little nervous that I won't find a suitable position - but that is good in a way - at least it will keep me on my toes (and stop me from spending with abandon!!)
OH is in the movie industry and it has been very tough even just trying to find out who to approach for employment. He has managed to find 6 email address and he has had the same reply - CV fantastic but need to see you...
I feel that considering the feedback weare definitely doing the right thing is going over:exit

I applied for a job as deputy editor on a magazine last week, sent off some samples and am waiting to hear back. That's in Christchurch, which would be great. I'm flying to NZ in 3 weeks anyway, on a 6 month visa, and will start looking in earnest once I'm there. Hopefully I might have an interview set up by then.
Editorial jobs - especially in travel publishing - don't come up very often. Usually they are not advertised, so it's a case of being in the right place at the right time and then just applying on spec. So far I'm just checking SEEK and search4jobs while I'm still in UK, and have applied for the police check already for when I need to apply for a work permit. I reckon I'll open a PO Box when I get there so I've got somewhere to store certificates and other documents instead of lugging them round NZ with me.

Hi, I'm looking for a job with pre-schoolers too - or I might become a beekeeper! I'm a nursery nurse and I don't expect to get a job before arriving in NZ, but I find that quite liberating, it would be nice to have a change of direction. I quite fancy shop work, or a garden centre, I think that would be a good way to meet people (only joking about beekeeping - even though they are on the skills shortage list)
OH is looking for a very specific job - Furniture Assembly Instructor in the prison service, so we've just got to wait, wait, wait :roll until a position comes up.
Good luck! Carol

We've both worked for nearly 30 years in UK so time for a little r&r methinks. Anyway, our free time is running out now, we have just bought a house with a small mortgage so we've got to find jobs soon. Ah well all good things come to an end don't they?! So, if anyone knows of any trucking jobs or banking jobs in Taupo, please to let us know!! Ta. :cheers

Looking for a job myself, but only half-heartedly. I am strongly considering going back to school for Veterinary Nursing. I get a bit frustrated that I don't seem to have practical or easily applicable job skills, so I thought I'd better get some. (I have a degree in Biotechnology/Molecular biology). If I become a Vet Nurse I'll also be better equipped to care for the small farm I want to have someday. :laugh
I'd just be excited to get some maybe-interviews lined up for sometime after I arrive.

Good luck J, what is the job? Sorry not to have replied sooner, been away.
Agent very positive about primary teaching; if I see a job I like, I contact her and she contacts the school and I guess 'sells' me......we're hoping for Nelson area but have my doubts coz everyone wants to go there, Tauranga area, Hawkes Bay.....keep swinging between trying to get job for Feb 08 when eldest would have 1 yr at Intermediate or Feb 09 when straight into high School....probably should go all out for this Feb but OH not convinced coz loves his job here and doesn't think will get same there; he's in conservation employed by County Council. Also I start new job here in Oct so already feel bad if I then leave in Feb...but the right time will always be hard to guage......

I am applying for a development worker role, not done application yet, I must sort it by the end of the week. We really fancy Hawkes Bay, but think I am going to struggle to find work there, I think hubby will be fine, but hes injured blinking back!! What agent are you using? Is it specifically for teachers??

Hubby will be out in April job hunting as its the first opportunity he has to fly out (current holiday year runs Apr-Mar)
He currently works as a Commercial Manager for good old M&S so is looking for something in retail in or around Christchurch.
Going to send his C.V out to major retailers in NZ in advance and get in contact with agencies so hopefully will have interviews lined up on arrival.
Sounds a long way off but will come round quickly i'm sure!
I think I will hold off until we hopefully arrive, I currently run my own childminding business and work at a pre-school but I don't think the qualifications I have are recongnised in N.Z. - will cross that bridge later.

29th August 2007, 05:50 AM
ICP,DCP,ECP so now have the complete qualification with Cache. Have been told by an examining board that this is the same as NVQ3 but reading other websites NZ recognise NVQ4 which I dont want to start as we want to be in NZ this time next year.:raebanana
Have been childminding for 5 years and worked in the Pre-School as a deputy supervisor for a year, have done a variety of courses and the usual first aid etc. I have worked with a variety of children including some with special needs and learning difficulties.
As I have a large family of my own I am thinking that I would like to still do pre school type work hopefully term time/ part time so I can be with the family in the school holidays, but so long as my hubby has a job I can leave it until we arrive.
Would be prepared to do further training once in NZ but I don't know if that would be taken in to account? Exciting times ahead....!
Kerry x
holland
29th August 2007, 06:07 AM
Hi Kerry,
Gosh, do NZ want people to have NVQ 4 to work in a pre-school? Your experience seems varied, so Im sure that if the NVQ 4 qual was an issue, they may take you on and you could undertake qual at the same time whilst you work.
Think the equivalent of childminders are home based carers in NZ, there seems to be lots of different variations of early years care, the equivalent of SureStarts are Family Starts in NZ, they provide creches and the like, so could probably fit around your family.
If you do a search for 'childcare' on this site it will probably bring up all the different types and approximate costs, so you may be able to get an idea of wages and things....
Exciting isn't it!!! ( and SCARY)

Yep we all are a bit barking! A lot of people have had trouble selling house as youve probably read, may be worth researching your local area, and seeing where your house sits, and working out whether it would be better putting it up sooner rather than later....we were told lower end of the market 6-8 weeks and higher end 6-8 months!!, this could potentially make a huge difference to your plans if you have a job offer in place...its a nightmare trying to make everything tie in together. We've sold and havent got jobs!! must be mad!!

We have decided to get the house sold as it may as you say take 6 months, but if it take 6 weeks we shall just rent. If NZ doesn't want our small tribe:D then we have decided to move areas anyway so if the house is sold, one less thing to think about!

I started seriously applying last week after making a few tentative contacts over the last two months. Have applied for about eight jobs now. If anybody has any contacts in the media sector who wants a journalist (particularly for subbing or content editing) then give me a shout. My OH has a job already so where I get my job could decide where we end up living (Christchurch first choice, Wellington second). Did anyone notice any changes once their ITA was accepted and you got your work permit? I think my applications may be looked at more favourably once I'm eligible to work in NZ.

mmmmmmmmmmm, thats the difficult part...the companies are soooo different...any advice appreciated:
Job 1- Family business, say they look after there own, good wages, monday to friday, no overtime as family is their main concern
Job 2- National business, less hourly rate than job 1, but works out more money with all of the overtime and being on call 2 weekends out of every month, get a van, and lots of training available, quite target based.
Had Job offer very quickly from Job 2, Job 1 we are waiting for it to arrive in the post ( postal strike great!)...but have a confirmation email. Had one phonecall with job 1, and got offer, and national company have rang numerous times to see how we are getting on, and tell us about the area, and offered to show us around when we arrive.....
Really difficult to decide ...

OH used to work for a family business which was great to start with but the HR side of things wasn't great and the opportunity to have promotion wasn't there.
He now works for a large organisation which does offer job security, has policies and perhaps too much red tape but the training he receives is good and offers the opportunity to go further, they are still really good like the family business when it comes to family issues ie poorly kids etc.
I know its very personal choice and what I have said isn't of much help..:uhoh
