Hi, folks.

I'm revamping my CV and realize that I don't fully understand how to change the levels I've taught to jive with NZ system.

In the US, grade 12 is the last year in secondary school. Is this year 13 in NZ? (I've also taught grades 9, 10, and 11).

And I have taught both honors and university levels. Will these be understood as such or do I need to express them using different buzz words?

I'm ashamed to admit that I don't understand how the various NCEA levels compute in regards to "general" levels and "honors" levels in the US, either.

I hope someone can offer explanation on any of this...? :uhoh

I know a whole bunch of teachers will be along shortly with a proper answer - but I'd suggest changing the year groups into age groups because if you say "I taught 16-year-olds" then that will be an easy translation for those reading your CV. I personally don't know about the US honours systems, although I've heard of honours students, so perhaps again the age and the sort of advanced work they were doing...

Hi there, I'm not a teacher nor familiar with the US system either so this may be a bit limited for yuo, but the years here correspond to the UK system:
Reception to year 6 are primary school, which kids leave at 11. (So Reception children are 5, Year 1 are 6, Year 2 are 7 etc). That means they start Intermediate school as rising 12s and do Years 7 and 8 there. College goes from Year 9-13, so they leave at age 18 from Year 13 as you say.
I don't know about the honours system in US so can't say, but I think Wiki's suggestion is a good one.

Thanks for the help. I'm finally getting a good sense of the year levels and have changed my CV accordingly...but I've noticed one job ad that reads "years 9-15." Was that a typo? I thought Y13 was the highest year for college/secondary school?

...I forgot other questions I have regarding my CV: should I put NZQA level assessment in covering letter or on CV? And I know I should include my NZTC registration and my PR status in covering letter, but should this also go on CV somewhere?

Some schools are known as "area schools" these tend to be in rural areas where there is no intermediate schooling option.

In the small town where I grew up you went to Primary school from age 5-11ish and then high school from 11-17. So it was a seven year high school, rather than five.

Just to confuse matters, most Catholic primaries in NZ are age 5-13ish so include those two extra intermediate years into the primary process, rather secondary.
