We have traveled twice over to the UK and just winged it, landing in whatever B&B happens to be nearby in the afternoon/evening when we feel like stopping.

Can one do this in NZ? We're not choosy, a bed will do, and maybe some pub food within driving distance - but just wanted to confirm that people have signs out and there's a reasonable chance of finding accomodation in most towns along the way.

(looking to travel down from Auk to Chch Sept 14-24)

There's not very many of the British style B&Bs, but there are thousands and thousands of very reasonably priced motels - most of which have their own cooking facilities. If you're travelling outside of the main tourist season and not when the schools are out (which it looks like you are), it's easy to find somewhere to stay on a night by night basis (it's how we normally travel around NZ).

Have a look at some of the Backpackers...very cheap and generally centrally located, if your not to fussy about noise at night it could be an option.

I did this a couple years ago but was mostly staying at backpacker's type places. I never had a problem in January, but it seemed to be busier in February.
