Hey,
I was wondering is there a place in NZ that fits the following:
Fairly populated, good for a business like a cafe or fast food place.
Easy commute, so i could live on the outskirts where the property is cheaper and the views are nicer and commute in.
Nice sandy beaches, within a reasonable distance.
Lots of water sports & other activities available.
Not in a place that could possibly recieve a large earthquake or be blown up by a volcano (i dont know if this is possible in NZ?)
Ski slopes not too far.
Safe feeling, a place where you can walk around at night and not be worried about getting stabbed or robbed.
Nightlife, im not to bothered about this but it would be a bonus.
Breath taking views within reasonable distance.
Fairly hot in summer, cold in winter (i love the snow).
I know i dont ask for much :D

If you want seasonal weather and cheaper housing (in comparison to Auckland anyway), I would say Christchurch is your best bet. Warm summer, colder winter. Dunedin may be a bit to far south for your plans...? Palmerston North is supposed to be a good place to start up business...remember reading this somewhere at London Expo last October...but near big volcano:o ! You can't completely get away from natural hazards here....Auckland is on volcanic field, Wellington is almost slab bang on a fault line, and Christchurch area will be in for some serious shaking 'when' the Alpine Fault decides its time for some more action. If you want to be in the safest place, Southland or Northland is your answer, but probably not what you had in mind.

Thanks, i thought of christchurch seems to be ok.
TBH id be more worried about an earthquake than a volcano, but then again the north island is also on a huge fault isnt it?
Northland might be ok, i did like bay of islands.
Edit: I may just live on the edge and live wherever i like the most even if it is going to shack rattle n roll upto 8 on the richter scale.

At least volcanos usually give some warning! You just have to be mindful about earthquakes, and not think it'll never happen or that you could get run over by a bus tomorrow. There is also a faultline all the way down South Island too. But, unlike North Island it doesn't cut through highly populated places. Still anywhere on West Coast of S Island is likely to be completely cut off if big quake occurs.
Northland is sparesely populated....beautiful, but not necessarily the best place to start a business. Have you seen the flooding on the news recently?

Lawrence in Otago, cafes with passing trade on SH8 heading to the skifields 2 hours away.
White sandy South Pacific beaches 40 mins away
Water sports on the southern lakes (2hrs) or Lake Mahinerangi (20minutes)
Not near a fault line although a 8.5 magnitude quake in Fiordland the other year was felt as a gentle rocking.
What's a crime? We had some teenage lads get drunk last year and tip over the flower barrels that line the main street and broke a fence. They had to replant the barrels, fix the fence and go round each house to apologise for making the mess and noise. That was their punishment.
Blue mountains form the backdrop to most views from the town. Autumn colours are far superior to the more famous Arrowtown.
Temperatures in the summer are Low to Mid 30s, around 7 - 10 in Winter with an average of 2 days of snow, but only 2 hrs to the skifields
Night Life is the only let down, that would be an hour away in Dunedin unless you like the pub.

I would say that Rotorua or Taupo is the nearest to all your equiremnets.
Fairly populated, good for a business like a cafe or fast food place.
Definetly :nice1
Easy commute, so i could live on the outskirts where the property is cheaper and the views are nicer and commute in.
Both are some of the cheapest housing around
Nice sandy beaches, within a reasonable distance.
Tauranga is not too far from Rotorua
Lots of water sports & other activities available.
Definetly for both :nice1
Not in a place that could possibly recieve a large earthquake or be blown up by a volcano (i dont know if this is possible in NZ?)
mmm!
Ski slopes not too far.
Definetly for both :nice1
Safe feeling, a place where you can walk around at night and not be worried about getting stabbed or robbed.
Definetly for both
Nightlife, im not to bothered about this but it would be a bonus.
Pretty good for NZ in both
Fairly hot in summer, cold in winter (i love the snow).
Definetly for both :nice1
Hope that helps?

* Not in a place that could possibly recieve a large earthquake or be blown up by a volcano (i dont know if this is possible in NZ?)
* Ski slopes not too far.
If you're in the North Island - the only ski slopes are on the side of a volcano.
That said - it's not scheduled to errupt for another forty years or so.:)
* Safe feeling, a place where you can walk around at night and not be worried about getting stabbed or robbed.
I think that could be said for just about anywhere in New Zealand (except possibly some of the very dodgy bits of Auckland.
