Hi
Allied Pickford gave us a pretty competitive rate, but subject to peak season surcharge and general rate increment. Is this common? Has anyone encountered such surcharge before and what is the typically amount? I was told that they apparently could only confirm the surcharge, if any, about a month before the shipping date.

My estimated shipping date is end Nov, but we have to move out from our current place now, which is why we need to start packing very soon.

Many thanks in advance
Slong

New to me. I'd shop around.

We were told the same thing with John Masons, in our case I got the feeling they were trying to get us to commit sooner rather than later (to avoid any possible surcharge).

In our case it didn't change anyway.

Would check with other movers (got the feeling that this was standard practice).

Get a few quotes....then let companies compete with each other....they are always willing to negotiate for the business.

If you use John Mason, then you get The Moving Company. Just though you should know. Check out previous threads.

Thank you all for your advices.

Ian,
You could be right. The chap from AP told me that, too, except that other companies may not highlight it so specifically. I have another quote which makes the following exclusion:
"Any freight rate increases or war risk surcharge imposed on freight will be billed at cost."

I would presume it refers to similar charges.

Cheers
