does anyone live in the bush?

weve seen a nice house in a bush setting and was wondering if anyone had or does live in the bush, we know some of the benefits ie cheaper house, lots of privacy, birds etc but not sure on things like damp, insects (mosquitoes??)etc, any advice gratefully received.

From when we travelled and stayed in lots of houses deep in bush, check water supply and power, then open water/mozzy liklihood. You do get used to them, eventually, but for kids very trying.

think sand flies, damp house if the sun doesnt get to it, no phone signal, maybe no broadband. Possoms, no electrics, septic tank, tank water

On the other hand theres the seclusion the whole nature of the thing.

The lady that I took the job over from was telling me about where she lives, on sandy point....they have no electric or water or mains drains - but they can put their kayak straight onto the river, they have the whole domain as their back yard!

I am going for a visit soon, and it sounds idilic but with cell phone coverage as nill, tv not too good and no broadband I'd never be able to live there - YET - think the UK family would be very upset! and Jason would linch me LOL

Depends on the bush block. We own 12 acres of sloping bush (which contains a small waterfall) and live on the periphery of it. We have wonderful birdlife, no possums, no mosquitos, our house is sunny and warm, we have a septic tank and two fresh water tanks, good TV, phone and broadband. Even better we have peace and quiet and a stunning night sky due to no light pollution.

One thing not mentioned which we do get are bush spiders and field mice, they tend to want to move in when the weather cools. The mice are sadly dealt to and the spiders carefully put back outside. We also get wetas and huge moths at night, depending on the moon, and praying mantis - all of which are outside not inside!

Wouldn't swop it for the world :clap

The first house we rented in Dunedin was up in an area known as the Leith Valley and although we were less that 10 minutes drive to the city centre you felt a million miles from everywhere. Great rural setting we had a 4 acre garden, water supply was from a stream running through the property (all properly filtered and sterilised) we had two neighbours one was a farm right next door and the other was about half a mile up the track....

thanks for the advice, as were on waiheke we are used to the rainwater tank for water and septic tank. tv signals poor too but we dont watch it much anyway. like a lot of people we rely on the broad band to speak to people in uk but the phones lines on waiheke are pretty good. the spiders dont really do it for me but things like praying mantis etc sound cool!

Another view!!! When we found the land, OH stated THIS is what I have travelled around the world to find! It had only a one bed bach on it with no kitchen to speak of, but we lived in it and it was fun! Will post a picture of the house we built if anyone interested in what can be achieved here :yes

We turned the one bed bach into this house with pool!! There is a long story to all of this with common threads to other's immigration tales - starting with our house buyer in the UK dropping his offer by almost one third of the asking price one week before we were due to leave! And that meant we arrived here with the princely sum of $4000 to our names!!!

Sorry - I'm hi-jacking the bush thread.:uhoh

Isn't that the wonderful thing about NZ? That heaven on earth really is available, regardless of where you settle, even here in Auckland!
