You have two other options, a work to residence visa or a temporary visa. With a temp visa you must have a job offer not sure about the other one. Have a look at this link http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/

Other alternatives also include gaining entry by direct investment or Long term business visa, which gives you the chance of buying/setting up in business in NZ.
I believe the investment visa cat. now requires $2mil.

I have a sister already living there, and was hoping that there may be a sponsorship type of visa that we could look into. Any thoughts???

NZ Immigration do have reunification visas for families.
