We still haven't had an official case officer yet but have been told unofficially that we have been accepted and we are just in a queue. I have got loads of craft stuff that I need to take with me (rubber stamps etc) and lots of books. We are doing the craft room out and sorting stuff that I have to take and what I have to get rid of. Will we be able to pack some stuff in plastic containers or will we have to let the guys who do the packing do it for us. We are thinking that if we can do it now while we are sorting stuff out then it will be something done. I have got loads of books and loads of craft stuff in fact I think there is more of that stuff than furniture haha:) Janet

You can do it all yourself, or you can let them do all of it, or anything in between. It depends on your contract with the moving company and how much liability you're willing to assume for yourself rather than insuring.

We packed lots of stuff so that we could get it sorted. We didn't seal the boxes though and when the movers came they just packed our boxes into their own boxes i.e. took one or more of our boxes and packed it into one of their boxes, simpler for us and for them.
I guess it might depend on the size of your boxes though?

I will hopefully be going over in a year and I am an avid scrapbooker and altered artist / stamper- any advice on packing these things would be very welcome - also any info about craft /art shops in the Dunedin area

Jan - glad to hear that it is all coming together and hope you get your formal acceptance really soon. Have you put the house on the market yet?

In order for stuff to be covered on most insurance policies, things need to be professionally packed. Otherwise it is only covered for total loss, not damage. We had loads of boxes of books already packed in boxes from previous move. They opened them to check contents and then resealed them with own tape and labels etc. That way they can go on inventory as professionally packed, not self packed. We also has alot of stuff in plastic tubs in our garage. They checked those too...but all glass stuff they had to repack themselves, otherwise they breach shiping health and safety regulations (if someone from customs or MAF got cut on brocken glass from something badly packed, they could make a claim against packers apprently). Check these details at time of getting quotes, and get it all in writing so packing done correctly.

That is what I was asking for. I am a scrapbooker and stamper and I have got hundreds of stamps and paper and accessories and really don't want to leave any behind as there is quite a lot of money in them and I have spent loads. I am hoping to start a group over there too so I will need my stuff around me. I am thinking of packing them in the drawers (metal) that we have bought so will they just be able to tape them up as they will be ready for packing really (all 9 of them) plus boxes of other stuff. That is before I start on the rest of the stuff in the house haha

Make sure you remove any feathers or other plant materials from your accessories (if you have any) before you pack them in draws. Make sure that on inventory, it all gets described as something like 'stationary/paper'. If it is something vague like 'miscellaneous' or 'bits' then MAF will almost certainly look through it all.

Thanks for that as I do have feathers so will make sure that I don't pack stuff like that. I have hundreds of wooden mounted rubber stamps though.
