Hi, I'm new to this so bare with me. We have managed to get general work visas as my hubby is a much needed truck driver, and arrive on 13th September, yipeeeee, :cheers
We are now wondering how to go about getting a WTR visa as going through the "accredited" company route is proving useless as no body seems prepared to pay the $50,000 a year required under NZIS rules!!!! can anyone help with a bit of advice PLEEEEEASE, we have family in the Nelson region and really want to stay. Would appreciate any advice. Thanks Carol X

Well if hes a truck driver, ive seen alot of bread runs for sale recently on www.nzbizbuysell.co.nz you could always look into purchasing a bread run business which would mean your husband could set his own hours. Its basically a business where you transport the bread from the bakers to the various stores in certain areas, there are also other transport businesses like this available.
You could then go through the long term business visa route, which may be harder but you might end up earning more money that way and you wouldnt have the problem with needing to find an employer.

Hi Alex, thanks for the reply, it could be an option as the wages certainly couldn't be any worse  I will look into that. Thanks

Sorry Maundy, but the possibility of gaining WTR without going through a accredited company is zilch. At the moment the only way truckers can get here is through a work permit. Yes, up to a few weeks back there were a few trucking companies who were on the list for WTR, but since they changed the criteria these companies, for the time being are holding off recruiting from this route. I am here as a HGV driver, and i know someone who was coming in through the company NZ4U who recruit from the UK for companies on the list, but at the moment they have suspended operations whilst they seek a loophole over the 50k wage ceiling.
The transport forum are trying their hardest to try and push the role through on the LTSL, but currently aren't having mush success. With the WP you can continually extend the permit by two year periods, so you are able to stay.
If i can be of anymore help i will.

Hi Kim, HHMMMMM!!!! I'm getting more and more disheartened by this whole thing all the time :-( We will try anything to be able to stay, and hopefully one day the LTSL will contain truckers?
It's even more frustrating as I have my Dad, a half sisiter and 6 step brothers and sisters in NZ!!!! but we tried through the family category a few years back and they refused us because I had 1 brother here in UK!!!! seems ludicrous to me. I guess we will just have to see if NZIS make any changes in our favour. Carol
