Hi

best bet do a search on the forums or/and have a look at this site . Gives you lots of information. Also contact the AA for NZ. Very helpful.

Hi,
I also have a Golf that we may have sent out to us (we are on our way to NZ at the moment, via Singapore and Malaysia). It is all very complicated and there are alot of hidden costs to consider. The website suggested by Stejude is a good place to start. I googled 'Transporting a car to NZ' and it came up with quite a few companies that either do Roll on Roll off (RORO) and or containers. The prices and the service varies. I can only suggest that you get quotes from as many companies as you can and then weigh up the pros and cons and the financial costs. Wally from the NZAA is very helpfully and can be contacted through their website.
I am still undecided hence leaving my beloved in my dad's garage with a month to decide what to do. Half of me wants it in NZ and the other half gets stressed thinking about it.
Good luck with the packing.
Clare.

The best price I had for Roll on etc was £1400. That was for a Toyota Hilux 4x4 in a container. Good price I think. The hidden extras, aren't really hidden, they just need to be found!! Mainly the import duites and getting the car registered etc. The exception for us is Im a kiwi and have owned this vehicle for 3 years hence no import duties, on the road costs will be $1000 so for me as its only 4 years old its worth it.

As you are thinking of bringing in a diesel car you really should read this thread:- Second hand diesel cars (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=11678)

It has lots of useful diesel info and not just about second hand cars.

Are you planning on putting the car in the 40' container?

Hi, Ian, yes that was the idea to put it in the container. We have filled it with all the household stuff and are going to put it in lsat, but I don't know what paperwork we have to do and keep reading different things re; Certificate of Compliance????
I'm getting so stressed about this whole thing now :-(

We couldn't fit our car (not a VW Golf) into the container (40' cube) in the end, so sold it in UK and bought over here. They do have VW here http://www.vwcentres.co.nz/ccs/ May be less stressful?

Hi Gil, Thanks for that but we have the container already and if we decide to leave the car it'll be half empty..or half full? and we really did want to take the car with us.
Also I notice you are a senior member, can you tell me how I easily look at the meassages and answers I have posted myself, I've just been looking into the answers on the "new posts" bit? I am a bit blonde so forgive me. Thanks Carol x

Pardon me for jumping in here Gil!

Go to 'Search', then 'Advanced Search', then put in you user id in "Search by User Name" and press search!

I would usually not recommend bringing a 'normal' car over as cars are cheaper over here, but if you're going to have a lot of empty space in your ISO container go ahead!

Just a reminder to make sure you follow some of the links from that posted above, including this factsheet - http://www.ltsa.govt.nz/factsheets/44.html

Also, if anyones interested, are these regulations (http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsPortalWebApp/channelsPortalWebApp.portal?_nfpb=true&_pageLabel=pageVAT_InfoGuides&id=HMCE_CL_000148&propertyType=document) if you plan to buy a car tax free in the UK and export to NZ. If you're a UK resident it's a maximum of 6 months in the UK before you export, which then means you pay some GST on import into NZ (but that's 12.5% instead of 17.5% and with a 27.5% deduction of the value of the car if you use it for exactly the 6 months! NZ regulations here (http://www.customs.govt.nz/travellers/Motor+Vehicles/When+Customs+Charges+are+Payable.htm). If you've used it over a year and you're an immigrant you don't pay any GST of course.

Some shipping companies here, again for anyone thats interested.

Hi Croft, Thanks for that, I was feeling a bit dumb not being able to find it. I've taken a quick look at the factsheet and have forwarded it to OH to look at.
We are looking forward to our mega journey and settling in NZ but at the mo only have general work visas, and now I'm panicking that we'll get sent home once they expire as we were hoping to get WTR visas once there. OH is a lorry driver and thats how we got in, but am seriously doubting we'll be able to stay!!!! I really couldn't come back to UK so am feeling sooooooo confused. But this forum is so helpful, i've only a few days left here and will get online once we arrive and get settled, but any advice would be great:-) Carol
