Is it possible to just go to NZ and apply for a working visa once you find a job? Then apply for PR at a later date?
Or is this completely illegal :(

I think many here have done just that. I wouldn't advertise the fact that you were planning on it though, for example as you come into the country. But if you were here to check the place out, and just happened to be offered a job- so much the better!

Thanks Tigerlily, thats great news!
We have talked about going for such a long time and we have now decided to go for it, I don't want to wait a year or so for PR!
Do you know how we would go about shipping our stuff out from the UK, could this be arranged before we go or would we have to wait until we have some kind of visa?

When filling in you declaration on the reason for your visit remember to put that you are visiting only, and not intending to seek work.
One thing, you cannot start work until you have your work permit, and this can take a couple of weeks to process.

Thanks speckythecky.
Yet another question - sorry.
Would our children be able to attend school if we did not have PR?

This is what I will be doing if PR doesn't happen in time.:exit
Be sure to say you are just visiting to customs. I believe you will also have to prove you have enough money to support yourself ($1000 NZD per month per adult, not sure about children. This includes credit cards as well I think!) during your stay. Your children may be able to attend school if you can apply for student visas for them. I am pretty hazy on this. Be sure to check out that section on NZIS website.

Just a quick question. If you were to go down this route, would you need return flights booked?

Hi
yes if you are on a visitors permit, then the customs officials will want to see return tickets.
Best of luck

just want to make sure here, sorry, as denzel washington said in the film philadelphia,"tell it to me like a six year old"...you can say, book a "holiday" for 4 weeks on a visitors visa, and then while your on your holiday you can get offered a job, apply for a work visa, once you've recieved your permit and started your job, not get on your return flight? I know theres all the other stuff of finding somewhere to live, getting all your documents for the visa, but is that the basic upshot?
The reason I'm asking, is that I'm halfway through sorting my work visa(with job offer) but I could really do with getting to NZ asap.

Yes but you would need to pay international fees at the school until you had PR or WP for over 2 yrs

Thanks (again!)
Are WP usually granted for over 2 years? Or would we need to have worked there for some time before you get one for that long?
Hope you are settling in ok, I've been reading your updates!

Got a job offer from NZ and company has applied for a 3 year work visa for me.
So the answer is YES, Work visas/permits for more than 2 years are possible (the max is 3 years and then you need to get it renewed).
Having said that, you can apply for SM at any time (provided you qualify) and your status gets changed to PR.
Hope this helps.
