Do you need to apply for schools in advance from the UK? We hope to have kids start new term in Feb...or is it similar to the UK in that you have to be a resident with an address in that catchment area?

Most schools appear to be zoned, I have just updated school zones thread (http://www.emigratenz.org/forum/showthread.php?t=12754) for details on the zones.
We didn't apply from the UK, don't know if you can and I guess it would depend on if you know where you are going to live.
AFAIK, if you live in the zone then the school is obliged to take your children (or at least that was what we were told by the school?)

My understanding is that they're obliged to take you in the neighborhood school IF they have space available. Is my memory correct that if a school is at capacity for the age of the child that you'll be bumped into a different school?

My understanding is that if that have to take you anyway, but if they get too full they will amend the zone, i.e. make it smaller. They have to give some notice of the intend to change the zone, and it seems a rather buerocratic process (and I know all this because the school the boys will go to was thinking of doing just that, which might have kicked us out since we will live right on the border. we seem to be safe for the time being, though).

You can make an "Out of Zone" application from the UK, but the chances are you have already missed the cut off time. However, when we did that, none of our kids got a place. In fact, William was 50th on the waiting list for his Intermediate school! When we moved into the zone, the school accepted him straight away.
Check the websites for the schools you are interested in and they will have a section giving guidance on out of zone and international student applications, with dates, documentation required etc. (Only do the latter if you are not going the residency route and have buckets of spare cash!)
If you live in zone, you will be accepted for the zone's schools. Primaries seem to be a little easier than intermediate and college, in our experience.
Anyway, check with the schools is the best advice,
Gil
