I know it depends on where you go and what you get done but what is the average cost of fillings etc in NZ?

Is it cheaper in the UK?

We had been here a week when one of my fillings fell out. Took about a week to get an appointment:wah . The charge was $145 so probably about what we used to pay in the UK but speaking to a friend her husband had a crown & it was $1200 :( so lets hope we don't need one of thoses. The schools still have school dentists which cover check ups & fillings but you have to pay for braces. Hope this helps a bit sure you will gets lots of replies on this one.

http://www.nzda.org.nz/pub/resources/cnsmr_feesurvey07.pdf might be useful. School dentists are not like UK who just check teeth, they can actually offer treatment for free. My daughter had three teeth out last month (overcrowding) and the dentist was great.

I paid a little over $1300 for a root-canal last year.

In the UK the same procedure (on the same darn tooth  ) cost me £350 at my private dentist.

The treatment and equipment used here was far superior to what I received in the Worthing (W.Sussex) clinic, but at a price it seems.

Yes, regarding school kids, they are enrolled in the school dental scheme which provide free dental care (from age 2). One of my sons had to be referred to a "proper" dentist when the dental nurse couldn`t fix his problem and there was no charge at all. "it is all covered", that s what I was told.
But it is different for adults. My husband had to have XR and it cost him 40 $.

would the dentist be free if you had medical insurance or is this with medical insurance and is a discounted rate?

It sems to be me that medical insurance is a must in NZ.

we have a family medical insurance but it doesn`t cover dentist expenses. It is a good medical insurance, though.
